Sprint Queen 11
Chapter 11

She is a part of 2018 Asian games and a participant to win medals. In
the camp all are serious, but the fact that bothers her is lack of
confidence to win in the game. There are a many who has lost before it
starts. At the same time there are a few who thinks positively and out
hard efforts to improve their performance. One of the senior officials once drops in to the camp with a psychologist, intention is to boost
the participants mental power so that it becomes easier to fight with
Chinese who are way ahead of rest of the Asian athletes. This a major
change in the camp. Rani is aware of these people, so silently
observes. She has gone through these tests before in Hyderabad,
especially after the removal of the ban.
- What is your chance to win? The doctor first asks to Rani.
- I want to win Gold for my country.
- Okay. How far you are compared to rest of your competitors?
- I won’t is abe able to tell you that but I am in the first few.
- Your name?
- Rani. I have broken several times my own national records in sprint.
- National and International events are different.
- I know that.
- Who is your favourite athlete?
- Flo-Jo.
- What is your favourite colour?
- Red.
- Your favourite food?
- Rice and dal, with boiled chicken.
- Why chicken?
- Chicken is cheaper than other proteins. And I had been in Rio
Olympic Games village. I saw their food habit. Mostly liquid and
chicken.
- For you I have a suggestion.
- What?
- Over confidence can impact on performance.
- Why do you think so?
- You should have said “I am preparing for a Gold”. Next you should have
said “I have belief on myself”. And the last, you should have said, ”I know
my duty toward my country”.
Rani replies politely – Sir, I have my personal coach and have personal psychological counsellors.
- Really! Who he is?
- He is from Hyderabad.
She is feeling to be blunt, restricts her to create any noise. She appreciates his thoughts and curious if he can change the participants mindset. With time she has realized people are there to create imbalance in life and a champion is the one who ignores all these.
Even to a champion media is important as they are associated to sponsors. Only a winner keeps focus on victory, rest is secondary.
As the games are nearby, her focus has shifted. Team members are cautious
even about their foods so that nothing creates trouble in dope test. With time
she has learnt a lot, even from her colleagues. One day she was giving a
small bite to a reporter, one of her team member arrives and says gently -
Rani you should keep them away from your life if you want to win.
Rani starts rethinking about her activities because the person who has said this is a potential gold medallist, and an internationally acclaimed sports person. The days are passing by with a busy schedule. Practice, sleep, and practice. She has stopped interacting to people. During the stay in the games village she is treated as a VIP. All
are aware of her name because of her fight against the International Athletic Association. People drops in to her and greet her. She feels happy but
management is worried about her limelight which can affect her performance.
On the day of the competition in the 200 metres sprint, her friend Hima and Rani both are trying hard to secure a medal. In 100 metres Rani has ranked
2nd, silver medal. She is not happy. She is willing to get gold. Hima failed to
qualify in the final.
In track and field, Rani is their aspiration. During the 100 metres, Rani gave a tough fight and missed gold by a whisker. Hima has a strong belief of
Rani's success, and she fulfils their expectations with another silver. She feels excited to hear the National Anthem while standing on the podium. The day it gets over all are sad. In these games they build friendship with other sports personalities from various countries. The game's village is gradually dissolving. Each one is greeting others.
Rani cannot forget when she speaks to one of her old rivals. On the day she
received the silver medal in 200 metres, standing in the lobby she observed
her coach sir is busy over the phone, and suddenly her coach handed over the phone.
- Hello Rani.
- Hello
- I am sorry for all my behaviour. Wanted to congratulate you, that is why I called coach sir.
- May I know who are you?
- Your old rival.
Rani tries to recall her name but fails to find. She has no enimity with
anyone. She never has felt anyone as her competitor. She asks coach sir about her name. Coach sir avoids. This is still a mystery to her.
Though she has not been able to perform well, people are congratulating. She is not happy with two silvers, she deserves gold. An amazing experience in her life was the Olympics and now this Asian Games. She has learnt how to practice. She has seen the best performers. At times she thanks life for everything she is gifted to.
Returning to country with medals is a nice experience. This time she is receiving 3 crore from the State government. Other than this, Mining Corporation and several
other companies declares gift for her. The best gift for her is the car. Currently, she owns fifteen cars. To her thinking about car in her childhood days were not allowed. She still
remembers a day when she and her mother went out to a market and she pointed out a toy. Her mother promptly replied - we are poor, we cannot think about cars. Once you
grow try to purchase one. Her first car was in 2013, she bought it through her cash prize.
