Last Hours
#WritcoStoryPrompt17
The last bullet left the muzzle of his rifle with a deafening bang. It took with him all his hopes of survival.
He reached for the sharp knife held at his boot strap. He wasn't going out without a fight!

The people behind him were all afraid. Mothers held their malnourished children tightly as they backed away with the others. Some gazed at their sons and daughters' terrified faces and prayed that it wouldn't be the last time they'd see each other in one piece. Injured men forced their aching bodies to stand up, willing themselves to fight until the very end.

However, the predators remained cold and merciless. They slowly surrounded the battered group, engulfing them in utter despair and hopelessness. Their sharp jaws and gigantic pincers picked off people who were caught off-guard until the group was reduced to a measly number of 8 people.

An injured man with one arm expended all his energy and managed to behead one of the monsters. A quiet sigh had just escaped from his lips when a burst of acidic green liquid spewed out from the beheaded corpse and melted the screaming man's body into goo.

Such a horrible scene. It made all the remaining survivors shiver in fear. They had no time to mourn for the man as the monsters continued to hunt them down aggressively.

"Captain! What are we going to do?" A desperate call rang out amidst the screeches and growls of their enemies. It was the voice of one of the captain's best men. Bloody wounds dotted his exhausted body but his attacks were accurate and decisive. He had to save the remaining people, but he feared that he might not last long enough.

The captain was in a slightly better state. He had just gotten rid of a ferocious mutated giant mantis, allowing the nearby mother and son pair a few more seconds of life. The pair also proceeded cautiously and tried to avoid the monsters' range. It was a very helpful act as it gave the others more time to focus on the surroundings.

Out of the corner of his eyes, the captain spotted a raised opening on the ground.A cave? It was particularly eye-catching as the surrounding trees had long been trampled to dust by the mutated insects. He had no time to question the safety of the potential shelter. The opening was barely large enough to fit in a person, and he didn't know how big the space was inside, but it could keep away most of the predators if they all managed to escape inside it.

He skillfully sliced through the body of a humongous spider before shouting, "Head to the cave opening on my right! Move!"

The group moved as one. Every individual simultaneously made their way to the opening. They forcefully carved a path of blood and corpses. Once the first person had reached the opening, he immediately crouched down and squeezed his thin body in. A thud echoed inside the cave until a voice confirmed that it was okay to go in.

Everyone then slipped through the opening until the captain was the only one left who remained to fend off the bombardment of death. He found a slim window of oppotunity and took advantage of it, performing swift movements before finally rolling into the cave just as a bloody claw brushed by his hair.

The captain landed painfully on his side. He groaned in pain and struggled to push himself up. The previous hours of non-stop fighting took a toll on his body. The others noticed and swiftly approached him to help.

As the captain listened to the blood-curdling sounds outside, he couldn't help but gaze at those who were lucky enough to survive this far. They could live for another day, or at least another hour.
