#WritcoStoryPrompt12
The old woman was near death. I could hear her try to draw in painful gasps of breath. I felt helpless as a doctor in this remote part of the world. Was there nothing I could do?
Not at all.
The flat line abrupted me mid-thought.
I felt the pulse draw away steadily, as her wrist grew limp and cold.
The tears condensated quickly inside her husband's eyes. Pain flashing from them like the light of an exit sign.
The veins bulged from his neck as he tensed to hold from bursting into a sob. Teeth gritting ever so hard.
It was a painful moment. But this was the result of a legal war.
His wife had Alzheimer's,
and had fought against the lasting love of her husband through court to win over the decision to be able to legally declare assisted suicide.
He figured her disease would keep her from having jurisdiction over a decision such as so.
All he wanted was his best friend no matter the circumstances for the last times in his own life.
His grip tensed as he held her lifeless hand, taking in the last moments he would have with his wife's physical body on earth.
"Sir are you ok??"
As soon as the doctor asked,
he fell over, toppling her body,
as he was pronounced dead immediately.
His heart was so broken the shock instantly but yet steadily ending his pain, dying from pure heartbreak and the thought of even beginning to have to be alone in this world.
As they searched his wallet,
a note was found with the following words;
"All I want for my birthday is to be with you."
It was meant for his wife,
as today was his birthday.
He hadn't been able to spend much time with her as he would have loved due to still working over to help stay afloat the medical bills. So he took off today, to see her.
Who knew they would be able to leave finally free...
