Cafe Catch Up.
#HappyFriendshipStory

I hadn't seen Adam Johnson, and more importantly Jessica Johnson, since we were kids and life took us down our separate paths. Yet, as I sat in the cafe at the local art gallery nursing a warming cup of cappuccino, it was like we'd never been apart. Adam was still the 'class clown' of the group, although he'd tuned it to a fine art as an adult and he was absolutely hilarious. Jessica was still as beautiful as ever, with her long red hair and blue eyes bouncing off that infectious smile she always seemed to carry. The love of my life, yet a path never crossed. Looking back at the way things had turned out for me throughout the years, that unrequited love was probably for the best.
Fifteen years had passed since I'd shared the company of my best friends from childhood. Fifteen long years of trying to forge new friendships with fake people. Walking blind into a whirlwind of peer pressure, temptation, and addiction. A young man trying to catch the attention of, and impress those who didn't really care how far I fell. Such a waste of life.
I'd been clean now for seven months, and back in my hometown for three weeks. Too many vices in the big city. Not once had any of my 'adult' friends called or sent a text to check up on me. That realisation drove me on. I didn't need people like that. Always there when they want something but never there when you have nothing. Not like Adam and Jessica. As soon as they heard I was back they'd contacted me and asked to meet up.
At first I was unsure. I'm not the person I was when I left here. Adam had become a very successful Aeronautical Engineer and his sister Jessica ran a business providing services for Internet companies. All I'd managed to do in that time was successfully develop a drug habit. Also a fondness for alcohol. I no longer felt that I belonged in the same circle as my two friends, but Adam had knocked my front door and was adamant that friendship was more important than money and status. What could I say to that? I had no choice but to come today, however I'm so glad that I did. I needed both the companionship and the laughs.
Adam finished another one of his jokes, and as I wiped the laughter tears from my eyes, he stated that he was going up to the cafe counter to order some lunch for the table. I watched as he walked away, a confidence in his stride that I'd never noticed before. I wished that I was as comfortable in my own skin. I turned to look at Jessica and was once again blown away by her beauty. The light shining in her eyes, her flawless skin, that voluptuous figure. My heart melted as her gaze caught mine and she smiled into my soul. Instant warmth. Then she opened her mouth to speak, but I wasn't prepared for the words that followed.
"I love you, my friend. I always have."
