The Tower, Chapter 2
Chapter 2,
"It means, they haven't set a foot outside of school and yet they look like this. There's only one way that is possible. They're already here inside the school!"
This caused another panic to come over the crowd but that was good. Ms. Kray shot me a grateful look. The reason it was good that they were panicking this time is that they were worried those... 'people', are inside the building. Now, they won't try to leave meaning everyone is safe for the time being.
Suddenly, when everyone was finally starting to become a little more relaxed with the situation, someone started banging on the door Grace and I had come through. "W-who's there?" Ms. Jenkins asked. All we heard was groaning and hissing. But no voices. Ms. Kray instructed Ms. Jenkins to keep all the doors locked and not let anyone in. Some of the guys from the basketball team grabbed a basketball and started a match.
Grace then came out of nowhere and asked, "What about our families? Do you think they're gonna be okay?" My body stiffened. I had an answer to her question, but I knew it wasn't the answer she wanted. "I don't know. Let's just hope for the best." I reply, attempting to take my own advice. Grace nods and walks over to the guy she had whispered to earlier and sat down with him and they started talking.
My mind wandered back to Eliza, my little sister. I'm becoming more worried about her by the second. She may be fifteen but she is still my little sister. It's my job to keep her safe and it hurts when the one time she needs some protection, I can't be there. I sigh.
I walk over to Ms. Kray and ask, "How do you know whether or not someone in this room is infected?" Ms. Kray turns a few shades paler as she sighs and replies, "I don't. The only way to really tell is to have everyone strip one by one and search their body for bite marks. It sounds like a good idea if I want a lawsuit on my hands." I think about that.
"If it's so dangerous, why send the teachers out when we need food? I'm pretty sure it's the school's policy that no weapons are allowed." I ask. She groans and replies, "Look kid, I have enough on my plate so why don't you go braid someone's hair or something? I don't have time for this." She then walks away and I clench my teeth. What a bitch.
I asked my questions for a reason though. The school's policy says no weapons are allowed so the teachers couldn't have any weapons and if they couldn't defend themselves against the infected... Well, it's pointless. If we send the teachers out, were sending them out to get infected. Even if they did have weapons, the infected are still human and the teachers will go to prison if they even injure one badly.
I sigh. This is very depressing to think about. I look around the gym, trying to see if there's anyone I recognize when I notice someone. Or, perhaps I should say lack of someone. I jog across the gym without tripping, which is a feat in itself considering this gym has over two hundred people in it. When I reach Ms. Jenkins, I tap her on the shoulder and she jumps in surprise and turns around.
"Ah, Farah, is there something I can help you with?" She asks sweetly. Sometimes I wish Ms. Jenkins was the principal instead of Ms. Kray. "Where is Mr. Bruno? I haven't seen him." I ask. Ms. Jenkins replies with a grim face, "No one has seen him. We don't think he made it into the gym." I groan. Today just keeps getting better and better.
First, we got locked into the gym because infected people out there wanna eat us. Second, no one seems to understand the gravity of the situation like I do and now, Mr. Bruno, the only teacher I actually like, is probably infected. Great. Suddenly, an idea pops into my head. I whip around and scan the gym. My eyes zero in on two girls heading into the girl's locker room. Cheerleaders.
I smirk and make my way across the gym, trying to make sure I don't look suspicious. I open the door to the girl's locker room quietly and step inside, closing it silently. I see the two cheerleaders and go behind the nearest wall of mini lockers.
"Uck. You should have heard what Mike was saying." Said one. "What was he saying, Becca?" Asked the other. Becca replied, "You wouldn't believe it. Mike and the rest of the basketball team are escaping tonight. They said they wanna see the infected for themselves." They continue to chatter but I stop listening.
This is why cheerleaders are awesome. Despite loving to bully me, the amount of gossip that reaches their ears is phenomenal. It makes it even better with the fact they can't keep their traps closed. I quietly exited the locker room. I already know who Mike is. Everyone does. Mike is the captain of the basketball team so the few times Grace has managed to drag me to one of their games, everyone is cheering his name.
I make my way across the gym when I'm stopped in my tracks. Everyone becomes quiet as they all stare at the entrance I had come in. There was banging. Pushing. Screaming. Everyone just stared at the door, not a single person moving. After a few moments, there were cries for help and more screams. Then, after two minutes, everything went silent. No one moved. No one spoke. No one helped.
