The bookmarks or postcards lay on the table. There were six of them with different mini paintings on them.  One of it was a silhouette of a boy on a bicycle in the forest. The second was a castle illuminated in the sky full of fireworks and a silhouette of a boat in the lake observing it . The third was a Japanese temple shining in the sun . The fourth was a woman overlooking the city from the hill. The fifth was the Effiel Tower and the sixth was a blank pastel coloured bookmark. Alice took them in hand one by one and examined them like they were made of diamonds.

"My beloved...you are early. "the voice rang out breaking her from her intense gaze.

The voice was deep but didn't startle her . It was familiar and the person too. The red jumper and green overcoat greeted him. The curly hair and red bumbled nose covered the white waxed face . His eyes were fixed on Alice. He sat at the chair opposite her and collected the bookmarks from her hand and shuffled them like cards. He laid them one by one carefully on the table.

"It's been two months since you were last here.  So how are you ?" Asked the Joker.

Alice replied "Fine. " . She was remembering that day when he first saw him .

Two months ago.

The alarm rang at 9.00 am. Alice hit the Snooze and covered herself with the blanket.

It rang again at 9.30 am. She got dressed and grabbed a bite of toast , took her purse and rushed for her office.

She took the road to the subway . As she was waiting at the footpath she noticed a Joker with his coffee on the opposite street. He was staring blankly at the group of people as he was sitting on the bench at the footpath. His fingers - wrinkled were holding the paper cup and other was holding a bunch of cards.  He looked at people in a daze. Some teens went to him - made fun of him, trying to shake him off but left saying he must have lost his mind  .There were no other performers nearby or a circus crew.

Alice was curious but she was in a hurry. Therefore she took off for the office as the streetlight was red. She passed by him taking a second glance at him but walked away.

It was at that day at the evening when she passed by the same street she saw him again doing the same thing.  She saw he was not in a daze like he was in the morning. Instead he was alert and smiling. She saw him going at the coffee shop . She followed him. She was getting late but she wanted to follow him. She saw him stop at the shop which was empty and in a corner.

She went in and didn't see him.  Instead she was greeted by another waiter who was wearing a brown apron and uniform.

"Welcome to Coffee Time. What would you like to have ? "

Alice was still looking for the joker. But she ordered anyway.

"One cold Americano "

"Sure Maam , right away. " and he left.

There was the same eyes who were staring at her since she entered. The guy who had a light layer if wax still stuck on his face and the glue from the bumbled nose shined like sebum on the nose.

When Alice was looking at him , he knew . He had been observing her when she rushed for the subway when the light was red. He saw her looking at him with eyes having a tinge of concern unlike the mockery that he sees in others eyes. He saw the  confusion whether to help him or not . She looked kind. And so he wanted to know her. He wanted to remove the worries that he saw was clouded on her pretty face the whole day that she forgot to smudge off the excess lipstick .
