WAITING FOR NEVER 7
Maya woke up drowning in a pool of sweat. She couldn't get much sleep last night after the whole issue with Frank and his secret child.

When she finally got some shut eyes after a boring method of counting backwards from hundreds to one, it didn't last. She would slip in and out of consciousness amidst dreams of Sebastian and his friends.

And now, she woke up, completely drenched in sweat. She just dreamed that Gia had died. The mere thought of something bad happening to Gia shook her to the core.

She picked up her phone to check up on Gia. It was then that she realised Gia had never replied to her last message.

Most of the time, Gia would just reply with a heart, moon and princess emoji. Or she would just reply in the morning with a sun emoji and a heart emoji.

It was their cute ritual, and it had been like this for years. Gia had never left Maya's message unreplied. She tried to convince herself that Gia was still asleep, but deep down she knew it was a lie.

Gia had a strict body routine every day.
She had developed the habit of going to bed by 10 pm and waking up at exactly 6 am.  And the first thing she'd do would be to text Maya. That's the way it has been since they became friends.

She decided to shove the thought of something bad happening to Gia at the back of her head.  Gia was fine, she was perfectly fine. She tried to convince herself of this, but after a long shower, the thought was still there. She just grabbed the bull by its horn and called Gia.

Ring , ring , ring , ring , beep .

The line went dead after it rang for a while. She tried again.

Ring , ring , ring, beep .

Again .

Ring, beep .

Again.

Again.

Again.

She grew restless.  Gia had never missed her call . Something was definitely wrong. Or maybe Gia had lost her phone. Yeah, that thought seemed a little soothing.

Maya decided to head to work. Hopefully, she'd meet Gia there, and Gia would say her phone was missing and the big hole growing in Maya would seal shut, and she'd be at peace.

Maya sat quietly on the train. Silently praying with all her might that her best friend was okay. When she finally got off, she took a deep breath before taking the curve and walking down the street to the restaurant.

She was surprised to find it locked.  Her heart skipped several beats, something didn't seem right. Without thinking, she dashed into the street in front of her and hailed a cab to a stop as it nearly ran her over.

A few drivers threw insults at her for causing such a scene, but she ignored them. The driver who had nearly run over her wore a confused look. A handsome gentleman hurriedly slid out of the vehicle.

He looked like he had just seen a ghost. That might be because the woman he started to develop feelings for nearly became a ghost a few seconds ago.

His once perfect face had WORRY written all over it. Maya was stunned for a second.

"Maya . What's wrong?  Are you okay?"

Frank asked, trying to mask the concern in his voice with a calm tone. Of course, it didn't work.

"Oh Frank! It's Gia. I think something is wrong with her. I need to get to her immediately "

Maya was on the brink of shedding tears.

"Alright, alright, calm down Maya. Come with me, we'll go to your friend's. "

Frank gently extended his hand and Maya took it, then he ushered her into the vehicle.  He asked Maya for directions to Gia's home, and he instructed the driver to follow the directions closely.

'This city is filled with mad people '

The driver thought to himself, then proceeded to do as he was told. After all, this meant more money for him .

Maya sat quietly, digging her fingers into her palm. A nervous habit she developed over the years. Frank noticed this and gently took her hand and placed it in his. She had managed to draw a little blood, and he pulled out a tissue to tend to it.

Maya was too worried to notice or even care about this.  Frank noticed this too. He had recalled Maya talking non-stop about her best friend, and he imagined Maya must love her a lot to be this worried.  He quietly pulled her into an embrace, and she let herself feel his comforting warmth, and they continued their journey in complete silence.

Frank was supposed to be in town to look for Maya and explain everything, and fate brought Maya to him. The same fate made it impossible to talk to her about all this now. This wasn't the right time.

"Right here. Stop right here!"

Maya screamed at the driver. As soon as the car came to a stop, she bolted out of it, nearly twisting her foot. Frank, on the other hand, pulled out a wad of notes and gave them to the driver without counting, then he dashed after Maya.

''Hm crazy people every day. Well, at least I'm a few bucks rich. This ought to see me through the week. If I'm lucky, maybe two weeks. Haha! GOD BLESS CRAZY PEOPLE LIKE THESE TWO!''

He shouted to himself and laughed before driving away.

On the other hand, Frank was still chasing after Maya on a flight of stairs. She found the elevator in use and with no patience for it to come around, she chose to use the stairs.

Finally, Maya pushed Gia's door open and Frank followed shortly after.

She wasn't prepared for the scene before her. Her heart broke instantly, and she dropped her purse instantly.

The place was a mess; shattered glass here, a first aid kit there, blood here, everything was a mess. And then, there was Gia, who had collapsed into a man's embrace on the floor as she sobbed like a 3-year-old. She didn't even notice Maya and Frank in her room.

Maya didn't need explanations or introductions, whatever this was, it could be because of just one person.  Carlos Burris, and though his back was facing her, she knew he was the one. He always carried a dark aura and Maya sensed it immediately she entered the room.

"You scoundrel! What did you do to her ?"

Maya questioned as she marched forward and attempted her best friend from his side. Frank quickly jumped after her, to prevent any dangerous events. Maya, however, ignored him and hugged her best friend on the floor. Carlos was too shaken by all this to protest. His mind was blank at the moment, he couldn't even face Maya.

He and Frank quietly watched as Gia sank into Maya's embrace and allowed herself to be comforted. Frank stood confused and Carlos watched as he felt something shift within him.

Soon, Maya was in front of him. No one could have predicted what would happen next, not even Gia, who knew Maya so well. The moment she reached Carlos' side, she landed two hefty slaps on each cheek.

Carlos rubbed his cheeks and shot daggers at Maya with his gaze. As if reading the mind of Carlos, Frank jumped in front of Maya to protect her from whatever Carlos might do to her.

He didn't know this man, yet he could feel how powerful he was, and he could tell that Maya had just crossed the line, and he might get into serious trouble protecting her, but he didn't mind.

''You're to blame for everything!  First you tell her you love her, then you break her heart a million times. You fucking suck on her like a vampire.  Then you leave her hopeless, drunk in love with you ! Scared and confused. A TOTAL MESS ! And just as she was healing, you came back to make her miserable.  WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?''

Maya screamed at him, regardless of Frank's attempt to stop her. She was now in tears. She was hurt and angry at the same time.  She saw Carlos' gaze widen, and she followed his gaze, and she broke into a cold sweat immediately.

She left Gia alone to confront Carlos. Frank took his eyes off Gia to protect Maya from Carlos.  In short, they left her, and she took advantage of that to grab a piece of broken glass.

"NO!!"

They all screamed, but it was too late. Gia had already stabbed herself before any of them could reach her. She looked at Carlos with cold, lifeless eyes while wincing in pain before dropping into his arms.

Just before her sight became blurry, she saw tears running down his face, and she heard him wail in agony while Maya screamed in horror.

Maybe he does love me. But it's too late now, Maya thought, before her lights went out. It was total darkness and silence.
