Childhood Incident
Real Childhood Incident
During Summer Vacation we children go to our Grandmother' s residence which is situated in the quiet country side.
One afternoon an incident took place that can never be forgotten even till today.
Children in the neighborhood gathered to play, while the elder folks took them selves off for a nap. The boys played games befitting their age, 'Cricket' and 'basket ball ' while the girls played ,'Skip catch game ' and the tiny ones engaged in running and playing ,'Hide and Seek game '
Couple of hours went by and the Sun was setting in the West - the golden rays indicating the coming of dusk in a few minutes made us reluctantly to return home as we were exhausted too and our stomachs were growling for the evening snacks and mouth began to water as my grandmother was a specialist in cuisine items so tasty and of high quality each of the meals she prepared for us were that we suggested her to start food buisness by setting up a Mobile Restaurant and she would beam at our praises with proud smiles.
However at this very moment we realised my brother and I that ourclittle brother was missing.
we began calling out his name and searched high and low in each of the houses but to no avail. Then we began to fear so went in to the gardens hinted in the rooms and even in the cupboards in the bed room but he was not seen any where .
Tension crept in slowly by now sympathetic neighbors gathered around my grandma and volunteered to search down the road even in to the shops near by shouting his name loudly.
My grand mother began to cry and few elders were empathetic in consoling her and some joining her .The scene was pathetically tragic.
An hour had passed by someone suggested that its time that we inform the Police.Hearing this my grand mother began to wail even louder.
My brother and me though just older by two years and one felt remorse thinking how unkind we were to our little brother and promised to each other that when he is found we would give our choicest marbles and share the Sweets and savouries with him giving him our extra bit .We even mumbled a prayer to God to bring him back safely.
A decision we convenientmy forgot the moment he came back.
As if by some intuition my Papa before going to file a complaint to the Police department ran around to the backyard and opened the room which was stacked with unused ,old, broken items and things .We children never dare to enter as it was the home of lizards and cockroaches or sonwe were warned by our grandma .It had a bamboo door and would creak when ever a strong wind blows so we were frightened of imaginary ghosts and monsters.
Now when papa opened the door and went inside he peered in and found to all our amazement my little brother fast asleep in an old reclining cane chair which was my grandpa's favourite chair but now broken so thrown there .
The noise we made woke him up and while every one were heaving sighs of relief my Papa asked him how he came to be there. His answer threw us in to peals of laughter for in playing hide and seek game he had chosen this place to hide and in sheer drowsiness blissfully had fallen off to sleep.
Tension lifted and my grandma s spirit having restored gave a treat of serving Tea with hot savouries and sweets to all the neighbors who thoroughly enjoyed it.
Long afterwards this episode was recalled and my little brother would listen in rapt attention as though he was hearing it the first time.
