There's Something About Emma
Chapter 1- New Girl
Sabrina’s P.O.V:
As I was walking toward my locker to grab my English textbooks, I noticed a girl, opening the locker across from mine. A Lakers’ fan, I guessed by the matching yellow and purple shorts, Jersey, cap and blazer.
“Isn’t that the new girl?” I asked my friend Britt
“Yeah, why?” she said
“Just curious, C’mon we’re going to be late for class” said Sam
Britt started to walk toward her biology class, I tried to follow behind ,but found my feet glued in place.
I suddenly heard a voice that made my blood run cold.
”Well, well, if it isn’t Lakeville High’s biggest nerd freak. I wonder who she's looking at.”
Wow, I hadn’t noticed that I’d been staring at the new girl. I turned around and saw Alice, the most popular girl in school.
"Alice, just because you buy your clothes at the most expensive places and your daddy owns a Lykan Hyper-Sport , several Lamborghini Aventador's and, owns a Rolex company, doesn’t make you special.” I shot back and walked to class twenty minutes past the late bell.
Mr. McGregor stopped in the middle of his lesson and turned to face the class.
“All Right, class, keep reading from where we left off yesterday "
McGregor motioned for me to follow him outside.
"Sabrina, this is the 5th time you've been late to class, you've had many absences than most students in any of my classes. You complete all your work on time. you had an A in my class, that changed. So, What's up? Something going on here at school? Someone bullying you either on or off campus? Something going on at home?"
"No, everything's fine at home."
"Okay... Well, what about here at school? Anyone giving you a hard time here?”
“Well…” I thought about back to when me and Alice were best friends, Back to when her parents hadn’t gone rich and told her to stop hanging out with poor and unfortunate kids like me. Back when she wasn’t snobby and didn’t steal other people's boyfriends.
“No, everything is fine just a little bit of bad vibes here and there between a friend but, that’s about it.”
“You sure it's just that and nothing else? I know how friendships work and I’m here if you need to talk about it.”
”Yeah, Everything’s fine”
"Oh, and please, try to be on time from now on. You think you can do that? I'd hate to call your parents."
"Yes, sir. I think i can be on time from now on"
"Coolio, All right, let's get back inside we're reading right now, your favorite, so come on you don't want to miss out on any more."
Mr. McGregor went back inside the classroom.
I started to go inside the classroom behind him but not before I saw the new girl smile and wink, before going back to her class.
Chapter 2
Emma's P.O.V:
"Hey, Britt, Isn't that the new girl? '' asked an angelic voice to the girl beside her.
"Yeah, why?"
"No, just curious. C'mon we're going to be late for class."
" 'Kay see you later, Sabrina," said Britt.
As I watched Britt walk down the hall and upstairs, I kept glancing back toward the girl who was still at her locker. I turned back to my locker to get my notebook and schedule. I felt someone staring at my back. I looked in my locker mirror and saw her looking at me, but then her expression changed from wondrous and bright to icy cold, when she heard someone calling her.
"Oh, look, it's John Quincy High's biggest nerd. I wonder what she's doing in my school. Heard Boringville wants their freak back!"
I just stared, stunned. I wanted to do something about it but I was afraid that they would judge me too. Sabrina looked as if she wanted to cry, balled up her fists, once she unclenched her fists she slammed her locker door and went to her class. I followed behind on my way to my History class.
After History was over I stumbled my way over to lunch, my head reeling from the volume of homework I had already gathered. From the amount of homework I had gotten in just the first day, I'd be up untill midnight which was easy since I usually went to sleep around two.
Chapter 3
Sabrina's P.O.V:
After study hall I walk toward my Biology class, where the seats were unarranged. As I spotted a place in the corner of the very last row, I noticed more students walk in straggling trying find a seat somewhere, as I'm scanning the room for any familiar faces, when my eyes suddenly stop and my stomach feels a bit queasy as if butterflies were inside, there she is, her basketball cap now gone, blonde hair flowing around her shoulders and our eyes meet, almost as if she had me spellbound, it was impossible not to look away.
That is, until the teacher came in and broke the connection. The teacher came in and assigned the stragglers to seats.
The teacher wrote his name up on the board and turned to face the class " All right, folks since this is a writing class, today I want you to write about anything that you feel like you want to get out and spread a message it can be anything from politics to theft. but first I will have to turn in this attendance sheet if I want to get paid." he waved a sheet of paper then started to read names off the sheet.
"John Floyd?"
"Here" he said
"Awesome"
"Kayla Good?"
"Here" said a girl at the end of my row.
I was facing the back off the blonde girls head only half listening to my name.
"Emilia Davis?"
The girl's hand shot up in the air and said, "Its Emma"
Mr. Johnson looked down at his sheet and wrote something next to it.
"Sabrina Hemmings?"
A couple of heads swiveled around to look in my direction. I blinked and said, "Here" then added in a mutter "Not entirely though"
Mr. Johnson said " Well, thanks Sabrina, we still have some time left before class ends. You think you can share some of what you want to talk about? If that's ok with you?"
"Sure. Mr. Johnson I'd love to."
"Okay then, whenever you are ready"
"Okay, well, I wanted to speak up about LGBTQ+ rights and what we can do to improve this situation. You see, kids have been getting kicked out of their homes for being who they are they either get slashed tires, they get jumped on their way home from school by gangs, get kicked out by their parents and/or face challenges across their way to become who they are today."
I looked at Emma and she looked back, smiled and paid more attention to what I was saying.
I smiled and continued to speak:
"As I walk down these halls or down my neighborhood, I see kids who I know that are out on the streets me wishing I could help but not knowing how to. Some questions still bother me such as: Why do some people hate on the LGBTQ+ community if we didn't do anything to deserve this much hate?
What have we done to our families or friends that we get to be treated like this? Is this God's reward for coming out to our friends? To our families? What has the world turned from peaceful to hatred?"
As I returned to my seat at the back of the row next to the window I could feel the stares of my classmates burning, slicing through me.
Emma's eyes met mine and I saw her eyes twinkle. She looked up and broke into a grin that made my insides flutter uncontrollably.
Chapter 4
Emma's P.O.V:
After hearing Sabrina's thoughts on what she would do to help the LBGT community better I looked at her and smiled.
After class I approached her and said: "wow, I didn't know that you're gay and saying what you just said about the LGBTQIA+ community it really made me look at things in a way that I never saw it before so thank you for saying what you said back there, not many people say those kind words before. You're a really great person."
Sabrina just looked as if I was nuts and started to laugh a friendly laugh.
" Uh, sorry but I'm not gay, I just like to respect other people's rights and treat them in a way that most people don't but yeah most of what I said it really does matter like how we as a group of students can make a difference just by speaking up or just by saying 'stop'. I've been bullied before by this girl who used to be my best friend but then her parents got rich off some casino and told her to stop hanging out with unfortunate low-life's like me. Anyway, what's your next class? I noticed that the locker across from mine that was not occupied for at least a year has now been occupied by the most pretty girl here and I- Um.. I should go. I've said too much, see you tomorrow."
'Yo, She thinks I'm pretty?' I thought to myself
I turned to see her headed towards a boy with blond hair and hugged him then held hands as they started to walk down toward the big blue double doors that lead out towards the cafeteria. As I started to head back to my Ferrari to get my own lunch, I saw her look back at me with the most beautiful eyes I ever saw and smiled to myself.
Sabrina's P.O.V:
After talking to Emma I realized I've said too much and I left from where I was, heading over to where Daryl was standing, he wrapped me in his arms and led me inside the cafeteria where my friends were waiting.
As we passed by our to our table a couple of students said: "Hey Sab, Hey Daryl how was break?"
"Aye, they're a cute couple. How was y'all's break?"
As we passed by them I plastered my Oh-So- Wonderful-smile. What was wrong with myself today? I loved school and I couldn't wait to get back after summer break.
As we reached the table my friend Sarah said: "Sabrina, did you see Mrs. Nichols she was looking for you" she picked up her cheeseburger, " She said to stop by the career center sometime this week."
Today, tomorrow, never. Cracking open the top of a Cherry Pepsi the Daryl had set in front of me, I turned to Ramona and said. " So, how was Summer Vacation in Virginia?"
Sara kicked me on the shin. Hard.
whoops...
As soon as Ramona started to talk, she launched into telling us about how her father was drunk the whole two months and all she did was pick him up late every night from a bar because he was too drunk. I zoned and at some point Daryl had returned the red goop and I swabbed a greasy fry through it. I checked out again; Round and Round it goes, where it stops nobody knows.
I felt Daryl nudge my elbow. "Babe, you okay?" I looked up to find everyone staring at me. I slit my eyes and said "I got Mr.Calcian for Modern Literature.
Everyone went "Yeoh." Sara said "Don't ever be late or he'll embarrass you in front of everyone." I winced. I hated when teachers did that
I picked up my French Toast and said, "you know all these anti-bullying polices should apply to teachers also." I chomped off a piece of Toast. “I mean, think about it, public humiliation is a form of corporal abuse, not to mention emotional"
By the look on their faces and their bobbing heads I guessed they all agreed . But what we're we going to do about it? Nothing. Even though I was student council President, I felt too weak to do anything to effect any form of social or economic change.
Oh, wait, I take that back, we now have both an ice cream and a vending machine with school supplies in the hall.
Sports Helping Level I was as Daryl had once said, A big pain in the ass. But I needed some time to fill in during Biology and Study Hall so my parents won't think I'm up to something with Daryl.
After class, I headed toward my locker to grab my backpack and start putting my books away. As I was putting my things away I heard someone holler "Hey, Sabrina, did you have a nice break?"
"Awesome, thanks." I said
I then heard a familiar voice
"So, you just switched schools? Where'd you go last year?"
I opened my locker and in my mirror I could see Kayla and Emma deep in conversation
"Jaguar South"
Kayla said, "Oh, yeah? Hey, do you know Kaylee? She's the president of the LGBTQ+ club at Jaguar. Kaylee Burns."
"I... I don't think I know her"
"You have to know her. She says she knows you."
'I said I don't." The severity of Emma's voice made me turn around to face them. Kayla caught my eye and I turned back. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Emma grab her backpack, shove a book in her bag and remove a black vest off the coat hook. "Sorry" to Kayla she said "it's been a tough week."
Chapter 5
Sabrina's P.O.V:
Once school was over I went over to my Chevy Silverado and once I got it running I drove home, after retrieving my backpack from the back seat, I opened the back door and heard my dad yell, “Sab, that you?”
"ye, ye, why?" I called back as I went to the living room.
"Good, now that you are here, can you take care of Lucas, while I make dinner?"
"Yeah, sure" I released him from the baby and he went over to the kitchen where he had pasta boiling, as I followed behind "Dammit, I have a fuckton of homework" Dad gave me the stink eye which reminded me that Luke was still here.
"Oh, sorry, Lukie you didn't hear my gutterball of a mouth" Dad smiled but couldn't help but laugh
As I made my way to the fridge to get a bottle of water I said "Tell me why do I have to take a lot of classes this year?"
"Because the classes that you have right now will look perfect- no, awesome- on your transcript. Show your teachers that you are serious."
"Serious about what? About being crucial in machismo?"
"Sabrina, I'm for real, show them that you care about your studies. " Dad walked over to the love seat and sat down.
"Oh, by the way, your mother's coming over."
What he really means by that is, my step-mother Lucia, will be coming over. My mother ran off with some other dude on the day of her wedding. She called my dad the next day to tell him that she didn't like him anymore and of course the day before her and dad's wedding she revealed to him that she was expecting. She then later decided that at the age of thirteen her child had a right to see her father. Once dad met Mom and me at the airport but then I wished I didn't have to see my biological father meet my step-dad. It was like watching a vicious dog fight.
