Should we respect before love or the vice versa should be the norm? Humanity has love as its foundation. Thus at the point of birth, there is nothing but absolute love. So unlike the other vices love comes to us naturally and the rest are either inflicted by society or learnt through various scenarios of living. Since love is an embodiment of many factors, perhaps we can say that respect is one them and probably the one aspect that blooms as soon as we come in contact with a fellow human being.

Respect your neighbour as yourself as was taughted in the good book sums it all. So without this first and most important expression, the rest can't come into place. With respect we learn to smile and get it back, we extend a hand and we get back another. We hug to express our deepest desires and most importantly we begin to speak and we get the understanding we so much cherish.

When all this falls into place, love brews in the air. Be it what form it may take, it makes society better. Since both should occur at the same time and one been the subset of the other, we begin to respect the role, they play in our lives and thus practice adequately to make humanity and society a better place.

The question as to which one comes first and as to whether one can be practiced without the other will probably require much more self compassion. The way an individual feels can best be judged by that person. So is the role respect and love has in our lives. In some cases one may exceed the other and that will determine the kind of relationship.
