Parent Redemption
#WritcoStoryPrompt28
Wide, frightened eyes took in the casual gait of the man walking towards her. Cold beads of sweat broke out across her forehead. It couldn't be him, could it?
It was him! That smirk on his thin lips was too cruel to belong to someone else.
But how could it be? She had killed him years ago!...
Nadia was an intrepid girl, one of those teenagers who can do it all and never seem to run out of energy. She excelled at school, was voted most popular for two years in a row and was very much involved in the community.
Every Wednesday, after school, Nadia would dedicate a few hours to help in the kitchen of a community center where some of the homeless would gather for dinner. Sometimes she would even stay afterwards to help clean.
It was then when she saw him. She was petrified.
"Excuse me, miss? Could I please have some more? I couldn't make it in time for the main course so I only managed to get some dessert. I would greatly appreciate any leftovers, it looked delicious."
How could her own father not recognize her? After all they went through.
"Hello? Are you okay, miss?"
Nadia didn't say a word. She just walked back into the kitchen and sat on a plastic stool the kitchen staff used to reach the top shelves. She covered her eyes with her hands while putting her head down and shortly after moved her hair backwards and stood up with determination. She fixed a plate without paying too much attention to it and walked out to confront him.
"Oh! Thank you so much, I wasn't sure you there was anything left. I was just about to leave, you know? The shelter where I stay doesn't receive people after 8pm."
Shelter? Free meals? What happened to all his money? The night of the accident, he was driving a Mercedes.
"This is delicious, by the way, I really appreciate it. This is the first warm meal I had all day. Sometimes is hard to find good spirited people like you during the day since everyone's in such a hurry all the time."
What type of trick is he playing? Is he pretending to have amnesia from the crash or did the alcohol finally burned his last few healthy neurons. Maybe he does have amnesia. He was in pretty bad shape when I left him in the scene of the crash to rot. He deserved it after all, driving his 12 year old daughter drunk enough to pass out at the wheel. The seat belt saved my life that night and I thought it saved what was left of my childhood as well but it sure is good to see him again. He seems clean, at least when it comes to alcohol intake. I had become accustomed to the idea of he being dead but...
"It's almost 8pm, sir. Do you mind if I walk you to the shelter? I wouldn't want you to be late."
