The Past We Left Behind - Chapter 3
Ethan hesitated, debating whether or not to go to her. Curiosity won out and he cautiously walked towards that alley. It was dimly lit, but Ethan could still make out two figures in the distance. One was Abigail and the other was a man he didn't recognize. When he got close enough to them, he finally managed to make out Abigail's words. Her voice rose with anger, "I already told you I don't have any money! Leave me alone!"
The man's face was hidden in the shadows, but Ethan could see that he was much taller and stronger than Abigail. Ethan's heart began to pound with fear, but he instinctively dropped his suitcase and bag on the floor and stepped forward.
"Hey, what's going on here?" He spoke, trying to sound as confident as possible. Abigail turned quickly as soon as he said that, a look of surprise on her face.
"You? What are you doing here?" She murmured. Ethan then turned to face the man who had stepped out of the shadows, glaring at him. Ethan could clearly see his expression now as well as his posture. The man was of large build, bald and tattooed, and had a scar on the left side of his face. He looked quite youthful, but also dangerous.
"Don't meddle in what doesn't concern you." He growled in his somewhat raspy sharp voice. "Get lost!"
Ethan instinctively took a step back. It was clear that he was dealing with a dangerous man who was no joke. A part of him was telling him to leave the scene and go on his way. To begin with, to buy something to eat since he was still starving. After all, the guy is right, this is none of his business. But then he turned to Abigail. He saw her standing stiffly on the side and trembling with a face full of fear. He couldn't leave her like that, so he turned to the guy and used all the courage he had in him to show on his face that he wasn't afraid of him. He took a step forward and straightened his posture.
"I'm not leaving until you leave the girl alone!" Ethan said, trying to sound as authoritative as possible. The man stepped forward, not at all impressed by Ethan's bravery.
“I don't think you're aware of who you're dealing with, kid.” He said in a threatening voice, then put his hand into his right pocket and began searching for something. Ethan's heart pounded loudly as he watched the man's movements. He wasn't sure what the man would get out of it, but he was sure it wouldn't be anything good. To Ethan's surprise, the man's face suddenly turned serious. He looked at his pocket and began digging violently in it, but nothing came out. The man slurred something under his chin, annoyed, and then turned to Ethan.
“Fine, have it your way.” He said before turning and disappearing into the darkness. Ethan felt a huge sense of relief as he watched the man leave. He turned to Abigail and looked at her tenderly. "Are you okay?"
His words seemed to calm Abigail a little, who stopped shaking. She nodded and said softly, "Thank you."
