Alluring Lies
#WritcoStoryChallenge
The streetlights were dim as the mist enclosed it in its mysterious grip. She peered out of her window into the darkness, was there someone out there or was it her imagination?
She then heard a brief sound of movement just beneath her window. A streak of terror and numbness caught her; her heart was now pounding against her chest, it was the loudest sound in the room now. But the mind hadn't deceived her, she had indeed heard a sound and now it was calling out her name, whispering, "Cathy, open up, it's me, hurry," the voice said in a rapid tone.
"Who am I opening my window to?" Cathy asked.
"Come on, Cathy," the voice begged.
"Larry, is that you?"
"Yes sweetie, please let me in."
Cathy jumped up from bed in her dark bedroom and reached for the window opening up for her boyfriend Larry.
"Why haven't you been picking up my calls, Larry?" asked Cathy who had now lit up the room and stood, frantically bombarding Larry with questions.
Larry had gone for a week now. He vanished into thin air, went AWOL on her one and only "lovely shrinking violet" as he would call her. But right now, the Violet wasn't so lovely at all. She was turning into a dark purple, blurting out things she didn't mean, and cursing their whole companionship. And the words cut through Larry's heart like sharp blades piercing through the skin.
"Well, if you are gonna keep disappearing on me like that you better leave for good," Cathy said still aching from what Larry had done.
"At least hear me out, won't you?" Larry said pushing Cathy gently towards the bed to sit her down.
"Do not touch me, Larry!" Cathy exclaimed, almost waking up everyone in the house.
"Cathy, dammit, give me a chance to explain myself!"
"Are you with someone else now? Is that why you disappeared? Were you scared that I'll freak out when you tell me that you couldn't man up and fucking do it?" Cathy was now dripping tears, "Larry, do you even love me?"
"I'm sorry, Cathy. I tried talking to you so many times. I knew you'd lose it."
"Well, are you... breaking up with me?"
"Of course not, listen, I'll tell you everything tomorrow. I'm just so tired right now. I'd rather hold you all night, I know you need it and I missed you."
"Not knowing makes me feel worse."
"I know baby and I promise I'll tell you everything tomorrow. I just need you to relax right now. I'm so sorry I freaked you out. I will never ever leave you," Larry opened his arms to embrace his shrinking violet. It was now coming to life but was not fully recovered.
They curled up in bed and held each other until morning.
A bark of a dog woke Cathy up. She reached for her phone to see that it was past eight o'clock, a little late than she had intended to wake up. She was obviously not in sync with her daily routine because of the previous night's events.
Larry was still holding on to her, like he might lose her tomorrow. She carefully slipped out of his arms and opened the curtains and the window.
She sat on the bed staring at Larry for a while before waking him up. "You're so damn perfect when you're sleeping," Cathy let out a soft chuckle, seemingly forgetting about what had happened. But she hadn't forgotten because after her short-lived joyride and admiration for her man she frowned and shouted, "Larry! Larry! Wake up!"
"Damn, Cathy! Why are you shouting so early in the morning?" Larry exclaimed, suddenly exasperated.
"We need to talk. You said you'd explain everything to me in the morning. It's morning now, isn't it?"
"I was arrested."
"You were what?"
"I got into a fight, baby."
"You're not making sense at all right now."
"I was at a club with my friends last week as I had told you. We were having fun, chilling, minding our own business. I decided to go get the gents another round. I got to the bar and started talking to this other guy who was sitting next to me. I don't know how it got to a conversation about relationships, we were all blacked out man. To cut the story short, the guy said he was an ex of yours. I punched him on the face. For all the bad things he's done to you, I had to do it. And of course I wasn't thinking straight."
"Is that all?" Cathy gave Larry an unconvinced look. Larry nodded. She moved closer to hug him but she knew she would go and find out the real truth by herself.
"Do you want eggs," Cathy asked, abruptly breaking the hug off.
"No baby, it's still early. Let's lie down a bit," Larry pulled her closer, held her tight, ran his hands down her head, stroked her back softly. They both stood there kissing. Young love as perfect as it can ever be. Cathy loved those lips filled with white lies. They seemed to make everything about him exciting. He kept her on edge and Cathy was such an adrenaline junky; a sucker for all things novelty. But Larry's lies weren't something you'd want to play with. They came biting like a bloodsucking creature, an energy draining monster. And Cathy was in for another ride.
