The Solitary Girl
Nancy looked out of the upper floor window in the library onto a moonlit gravel carpark.
The owners of Harrowing Hall, Rob and Paula, were away for the weekend and being the only one left there, she decided to wander it's corridors free in the knowledge that she was unlikely to meet anyone.
So, it came has a surprise to her, to see a Landrover, at that time of night, circle the fountain that lay in the front courtyard. It eventually came to a crunching halt opposite the front door.
She watched has two men dressed in blue jeans and camouflage jackets got out of the vehicle. Nancy craned her neck to see them forcibly open the double front doors. The sound of splinting wood could be heard outside and in the reception hall behind her.
Nancy ran out of the library and on to the upper hallway. She looked over the banisters to see the two men coming in.
"You sure the owners are away for the whole weekend?" Enquired one of the burglars.
"That's what Marge at the Post Office told me. So, no need to rush."
