The sunlight reached through the trees
casting morning shadow along the shore.
Between the reeds lay one, wet by dew, she
quivered her green shimmering feathers
to shake the droplets free.
The shower made a rain bowing arch shine in the air.
She blinked her beady eyes open
and made her way to the lake's edge.
Kicking webbed-feet, she swam out into the open water.
She greeted the day with a stretch towards the sky,
and it was in that spot she waited.
Soon, a glimmer of silver appeared below her toes.
It came closely, then farther away, it neared her,
and then disappeared once more.
The silver fish tried its luck again by nearing her even closer.
Yet it met its fate
as the mallard lady dove beak first into the icy pond
she captured breakfast in no time at all.
The early rising sparrow may find her worm,
but this sitting duck found her fish.
