"Shadow People Beneath The Pine Trees"
There are tall pine trees behind our house. The ground is full of long, thin, green pine needles and brown pine cones. If you look closely at the negative spaces between the branches you can see spiders the size of ping-pong balls hanging on their webs waiting for a snack.
At night, when the t.v. is turned off and my husband and toddler are fast asleep, during the hours of midnight and 1am, I turn out the light and unravel the curtains before bed.
It's always so quiet. Except for the occasional speeding car, or the nightly train horn echoing in the distance, or the sound of rustling leaves from beneath the trees that the shadow people cause as they pass through.
My dogs bark at them sometimes.
