Social isolation had forced an eerie silence upon them. While fear haunted their existence, one question was at the forefront.
When was this going to end?

Her name was Neha. It was late evening as she started her scooter and hurried towards her home. Her mother-in-law had insisted her to take some days off from work till the pandemic outbreak had been eradicated. But she was working on a project for couple of days and was almost at the end of executing it, and she wanted to submit it before the target deadline set by her manager. Her husband, considering his wife’s profession, had instructed her to return home at least before evening. He had also told her to avoid traffic and crowds while travelling and to wear a protective face mask.

Neha is a determined, confident and intelligent lady. She has been happily married to a guy working as a Customer Service Manager at an Auto-mobile company. She works as a web designer for a Multi National Company. Her aim is to start her own software company in a few months. Her parents-in-law are over sixty and often suffer from physical ailments .

She reached home just as her phone started ringing. It was her husband. She spoke to him and explained the reason of being late. Some of the employees have taken leave following the panic caused due to the ‘CORONA-virus outbreak’ and she had to spend extra hours with her team to ensure the completion of their task. She asked her husband to be back home early and to take care. She parked her scooter and entered her house.

Her parents-in-law were watching Television. She greeted them and went into her room and changed into a typical housewife avatar. While she prepared dinner, her parents-in-law were immersed in the news channel. The anchor reported the increase in the number of infected people and the panic around the world. Some of the nations were locked down to ensure the safety of its citizens and to further avoid the spread of the virus. The WHO provided safety measures, explained the symptoms of the disease and how quickly it spreads and infects the humans.

Her husband returned from work and together they had dinner.

‘I think the outbreak of this virus is a matter of serious concern. Eradicating it won’t be so easy,’ said father-in-law after dinner. ‘People are panic stricken all over the world. How is the condition in the city?’ Doctors had recommended him to stay indoors.

‘Yes, people are scared since the news of the outbreak. Walk-ins are decreasing day by day in our showroom. Corona virus is the only point of discussion everywhere.’ The husband answered. ‘China, Japan, Italy and USA are worst hit. There are restriction for migrants and foreign travels have been stopped until further notice. Most of the cases in India are due to the immigrants who returned from various countries. Our government is taking preventive measures to control the virus spread. I’m still worried if it hits our nation. How is the situation in your office, Neha?’

Neha replied with a tone of concern ‘Many of my colleagues from other domains have started work from home. But the project we are working on cannot be executed at home. At present, we have arranged our seats far from one another and we communicate only though chat or calls. Everybody wears mask and brings their own hot water, but still it seems this is not enough. Our Manager is worried that we might have to close the office before completing our projects. God knows what will happen.’

Mother-in-law spoke after listening to everyone. She recalled her grandmother’s story of a plague that had hit the world when her grandmother was young.

‘Many people were affected and died brutal deaths due to the plague. After most of the deaths, the government authorities tried their best to control the disease. Doctors and medical representatives supplied vaccines tirelessly and went on treating people. Still there was a large number of infected people. The problem was that there was very less awareness in those times. Today the technology is advanced. But in those dreadful days, people were helpless against such diseases.’

Neha and her husband looked at one another with wide eyes. Father-in-law was nodding his head in agreement whenever her mother-in-law looked at him while narrating her grandmother’s experience.

‘Just imagine the trauma of those poor people. How they might have suffered when they were entirely dependent on daily wages.’ She added. ‘My grandmother also said that many of her friends and relatives died due to the infections and hunger. People started to stay away from one another to avoid transmission. Social isolation had forced an eerie silence upon them. While fear haunted their existence, one question was at the forefront. When was this going to end?’

‘That was horrible,’ sighed Neha. ‘It must have been a long struggle.’

‘Obviously.’ said her husband. ‘Such disease are dangerous and its eradication is not easy.’

‘Oh, there is a news update from our Prime minister. Listen to this.’ intervened father-in-law and everyone took their seats on the Sofa.

The Prime Minister of India was live on TV. The increase in number of positive cases of corona virus (COVID 19) had shook the nation to its core and as a result the Indian government had come up with a plan to control its spread. The plan was a 21 days nationwide lock-down. The closure of shops, malls, educational institutions and all other private and commercial establishments except for pharmacies, hospitals, banks, grocery shops and other essential services. Only work-from-home allowed. The Prime Minister requested his citizens not to step outside their houses unnecessarily and in the meanwhile urged them to strictly follow safety measures that has been recommended by the World Health Organisation. He assured that the government will extend its full fledged support towards the common people. He concluded his speech wishing the citizens to to stay home and to stay safe.

‘The government has taken the right decision. But it may affect the economy,’ husband said.

‘Economy can rise again but right now we have to eradicate this deadly virus’ said father-in-law.

Mother-in-law agreed. ‘Yes. The Prime minister has made a good plan. There is nothing we could do other than this, except praying to God.’

‘Hope they find a cure soon.’ Neha said. ‘This lock-down will definitely help against the spread of virus no doubt. Hope the people take it in the right direction. The prevention of these virus is in our hands. Let us abide by the rules created by our government.’
