Change of genre
This lake reminds me of Veronica, her blue ocean eyes and the sparkle in them whenever she would sit by this lake. I feel her here more than anywhere else coz she was a stubborn one, always insisted on playing around this lake. I still remember when we moved here from the city, I was quite angry with you and furious with Dad coz you had forced me to leave my friends and move to a place with only two houses for a mile.
You got your greenery but I had no one to play with. That's why I was elated when I encountered Veronica at the lake. The first thing she said when I approached her, "Do you know how to swim? If not, move along." She would not let me stay even when I told her I knew until I jumped into the lake and showed her. She became my only friend here for the 8 months we lived here before moving back to the city.
But son when we were here, you were the only child. I let you play at the lake coz I thought you had found a good spot for your swimming practice as you were participating in the school competition that year.
OMG!! what was her name again, mom asked. Veronica, mom. You must be confused. She was the daughter of the Kruegers, our only neighbors.
Oh son!! You were too young, so we didn't tell you but their daughter was 11 years old when she drowned in the lake two years before we had arrived. Part of the reason we decided to move back was when I discovered this, the place started giving me the creeps.
You must be kidding. Then why didn't you stop me from going to the lake.
We only came to know 7 months in, at your birthday party, when Mrs. Krueger was drunk at our house party and told us about the tragedy.
Yeah, I remember. She started crying when I asked why didn't she bring Nica to the party.

So, Nica is Veronica, the girl you had your first crush on as well as your first best friend. Tell me, you are making this up. Stop trying to scare me. You know I believe in ghosts. Stop mocking me.
I was already shocked. Chill ran down my spine as the realization dawned on me. Suddenly her every weird quirk started to make a whole lot of sense. One of the most fondest memories of my childhood suddenly got a change of genre. Whenever I recall Veronica now, I get goosebumps and a shiver.
