The Call
I received the call at 7:30 on December 29, 2016. It was the Fleming County sheriff.
He asked if I was Roger's mother.
I said I was.
He went on to tell me that my son and son in law had been in a vehicle accident, on their way home from work, and were flown to the University of Kentucky medical center.
The sheriff gave me a number to call and I called it. It was the hospital. They told me my son was in critical condition and to get there fast.
What normally took 20 minutes to drive, took me eleven minutes to get there.
I went in the emergency room and found the receptionist. She gave me instructions to go wait in a room. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, several people came in. The doctor and everyone were very polite and professional, and told me that my son had passed. He was 23. He had four kids. He couldn't be gone!
But he was. My son and son in law, both, fell asleep coming home from work and run off the end of the Paris, Ky bypass, at 95mph, and flipped the truck 9 times. John had no seat belt on and Roger didn't have his on right and both were thrown from the truck.
I sat with my son's dead body for four hours that night. I had to call people and tell them my son was dead. The next few days were all a blur. I lost a part of myself that night. I will never forget It. I miss my son.
