Struggling To Be A Better Man
Kendrick Morton,41 was born and raised in Berkeley, California on April 18,1979. He came against many life struggles earlier on, because he was born to two people that could never find their legal standing in life. They had been overmatched by addictions and the times. Woodstock and now his era. The crack and prostitution epidemic from the 80's to the mid 90's. Kendrick's father was a crack smoking pimp. And his mother was one of his father's prostitutes. She'd also, dib and dab in drugs to disassociate from the lifestyle she'd become accustomed to living.
Kendrick had learned numerous tricks and trades of survival from how he'd grown up and from the streets. He never had any parental guidance or structure when he was growing up or supported.
Kenderick's, had recognized himself that he was very articulate, observative, and self sufficient ,due to the fact he took to the fast lane and cash games of the streets very quickly. The lifestyle came to him easily. He also noticed, that he may have an addictive personality/habits disorder, like his parents. Something's that attracted him where a necessity to his living. But there were things, like violence and being in control, that amused and excited him at an abnormal level. That's probably why, by the time he was 10 years old,he had already joined a gang and lost his virginity to an older woman. He had been selling crack since he was 7, (that's including to his parents). But he had preferred to rob people(home invasions),and he'd gotten his nickname from the older cats in his section, for letting off rounds with no discretion. He was enumerated being a part of the statistically crime rate, and having his name in the streets. He used to do a lot of home invasions between 11 and 13. He basically stopped though because the risk of getting caught or murdered sometimes outweighed the pay. Who wants to risk their life continuously, on unpredictable pay?
Not Kendrick Morton, aka Killa Ken. So he focused and concentrated on making his living selling crack. He became what you called a person loitering on a corner or stoop,a Block boy, a Trappa. Or a Doughboy /Cornerboy. The cats with that depiction, stayed 10 toes to the ground, posted on they're block. Strapped with a gun, dope bagged tightly tucked under their tongue, and a bottle of Palm Springs water in their back pocket to keep their mouth lubricated, watching out for 12(the police) vice,or task force. Killa Ken, was from,
NorthOakland 63rd Street. Some of the cats he grew up with were from B-Town (Berkeley) 63rd Street and some were from, "ICE CITY," 63rd Street. Which is,(NorthOakland) because 63rd Street ran through both cities. Due to that he had several streets he could do his dirt on. 63rd Martin Luther King, 63rd King Street, 63rd California, The 63rd park. But Kendrick was strictly from 63rd and Market the storefront. Committed and Loyal to the block he lived all his life. He had grown up with 34 young men from 63rd. But only 4 were still alive that he really knew through and through to love truly. Or he believed would die with him,or for him. That had been tested throughout the years. They were known as the "Tray-Boyz". Doyle"Dirt"Brown,Ronni"Blacky"Jackson, Antwan"Shady A"Hines and John"JJ"James.

Kendrick, still felt like nobody really loved him, and of they did. It was only because of what he could do or would do for them. His trust level was so low and held so many negative element's that it further harshed or closed Kendrick's understanding to the thought of letting anyone or anything captivate him emotionally. His ability to fight off any inkling of positive emotions, was beginning to take its toll on him. He was building an anger in himself that he couldn't soothe or push down. It was becoming embedded in his mold. It was poisoning his motivation and drive.
Then Kenderick's met Tonya Farin's,when he was 21 years old. And she would become a force in his life. Things in him unspeakable and unpredictably shifted for the good. But furthermore, she would teach him how to trust, love, believe and much much more.
Kenderick's life started to change. He started to feel, see, know and believe that love and positive emotions really existed. And that what love he gave his gang, block and/or associates that were tied to that world would always be compromised and minimized, because of how he had met them. Don't get it wrong, he loved the "Tray-Boyz," that he grew up with. But all he mainly grew to know was how to reject emotional whims and remain cold and survive. That's one of the first street trades you have to learn and take very seriously. Kill the emotional shit or it can and will cost you your life. It is literally do or die,out there. It wasn't that hard for him to do. Do too the fact that he never got it from his parents anyway. Positive emotions were never taught to him. So recognizing when it was being genuinely given and not used as a deception was strange, and very foreign to Kendrick. But so was being faithful to a woman. It just seemed Tonya Farin, brought the best out of him. She made him a different man. She made him a person. So he had to give their relationship a try and he did.
Tonya and Kenderick, was only in their relationship for 6 months, before they decided to move in together. He had told her everything about his life. Where he came from, everything about his parents, his upbringing and about the streets he had grown up in. She knew everything about him now. All his secrets, the good, the bad and the uglys. Kendrick had fully trusted someone to a point that he had divulged things about himself that he had never whispered back to himself in the wind.
Everything in Kendrick's life started to speed up after he confided in Tonya. He tried to change his ways. He had stopped staying out in the streets all night trapping. He actually looked for legitimate work, but it seemed no matter what he did he cannot find any. He had promised Tonya that he would stop selling drugs and carrying guns so many times.
Then 3 months after moving in together they found out they were pregnant. They were having a baby girl. All Kendrick could think about is Tonya saying, they're having a baby. Kendrick took a deep breath in, and thought to himself, he would for the rest of his life, have someone to love, and live for. But furthermore, he'd have someone to love him back. This development had awakened him to put more effort into valuing another's perspective about how drugs destroy people's lives directly and indirectly and that he was contributing to that urban destruction. Shit,he was a product of it. His parents were addicts. Making his own family and being responsible for them, up the ante in his eyes. He had a new found purpose to live right, to work harder, quit the street life and to succeed with every step he took from that day forward. There was no room for mistakes or immature excuses. He had to dig deeper to go on the straight and arrow. It was 3 months until Tonya was due to deliver, and Kendrick couldn't still find work. So he remained doing dirt in the streets and shit,he even stepped it up a notch trying to stuff their bag full before the baby got there. After a while, his trapping and constant late nights in the streets became the main topic of all their arguments. It hadn't helped that he had been shot at, and it was two visible bullet holes in their vehicle. But he had been robbed at gunpoint and Kendrick had been arrested, one night standing on the corner of 63rd and California where he had grown up, with dope in his mouth and a concealed firearm.
That was the third time he'd been arrested in the year and Tonya was really not feeling it. She was due any day now, to deliver their first child. But she had to stop her life, to figure out how to get Kendrick out of jail on bail for drug possession and a concealed firearm again. She was embarrassed to call their attorney that Kendrick had on retainer. Tonya didn't really understand the lifestyle of the streets. She didn't come from that. She was raised in Dublin, California a pre-dominated white suburban neighborhood. The attorney was a white woman named Laurie Sivall, and Tonya had already met her and communicated with her a few times. Plus she had already been paid, just in case of moments like this. But this was getting ridiculous. This was like the 4th or 5th encounter between them this month. Tonya had stressed to Kendrick that it was embarrassing and uncomfortable to put her in these situations. And he understood this based on,she didn't come from his lifestyle. So he'd done his best to keep the street life in the streets and as far away from Tonya as possible. Now they were bringing something that belongs to them both into the world. He knew that he had to be more safe, and she knew that she had to help the love of her life regain his freedom.
Kendrick was smart though,he had begun to save money the minute he was told they had a baby on the way. And it was a $50,000 bond which at 10%, would cost them $5,000 cash. He really had no choice but to bailout, because every phone call home to Tonya, seemed to add so much stress to her. She'd cried herself to sleep, and a few times, she had ended up in Urgent Care. Tonya, only told Kendrick about one incident. But it started to happen more frequently then her obstetricians believed to be normal. So she was put on bed rest.

That same day Kendrick had gotten out on bail. He was then informed of all the incidents that had gone on with the love of his life pregnancy.
Two week later, his daughter, Ericka Morton, was born on March 28,2000, prematurely. She was 5 lb and 6 oz.
Kendrick couldn't believe his eyes,he sat in the nursing room holding onto his daughter with tears running down his face, and holding the hand of the first woman and/or person he had ever equated a positive connection of emotions with. At that moment he looked at them both and vowed to change his lifestyle, and to be the best dad, friend, lover, husband and/or King he could be for the two Queens in his life.
Kendrick didn't stop there,he vowed to never allow them to want, need, struggle,or be without anything. And at that point he put himself into a catch 22. Because even though his heart held good intentions on really getting out and staying out of the lifestyle, both of them knew that he wouldn't be able to stifle the hunger and desire to provide and lead his family. Nor, did they know that it would push him deeper into the game either, where it would cost him everything. His first love, his kids, his life.
Two years later, Kendrick and Tonya had another child. A son, and he was born on August 8,2002,and named De'von Morton.
By the time De'von was 2 years old. Kendrick had moved up into the dope game, and was no longer just standing on the corner of 63rd and Market, standing on the store’s stoop, pushing crack rocks. At the beginning of the year he'd started purchasing and selling bricks( kilo's) of cocaine,at a rapid pace, up and down the west coast, and across state lines and Internationally. The money was good, and the chances of getting caught in his head seemed slim. Until he got into arms dealing that changed the pressures and constant thoughts of getting caught. Since 9/11 and the "Patriots Act"passing. Kendrick knew arms dealing could have it's good and bads. It could and would get your life looked at thoroughly. But it was too lucrative to pass up.

On November 15,2004, Kendrick was contacted by an old client about buying a good shipment of bricks, and firearm's. And it would be very lucrative if the play went through. It would eliminate the discussions between him and Tonya, about really giving up the lifestyle and quitting the fast lane/cash game. Especially, since Tonya didn't know that he had moved into the selling of modified machine guns, for like the last 12 months. He couldn't tell her that either. Hell no. On top of that, he started worrying about the alphabet boys (FBI) because some weird shit had begun to happen. Dropped calls and Kendrick had felt like he was being followed. It was a lot of odd shit. The arguments with Tonya were getting worse. Shouting and ignoring each other. She pressed about how much more money did they need? She'd stressed that they had bought a 4 bedroom house when De'von was 1 years old, and they have three cars,a truck,2 jet skis,a motorcycle and a boat. Plus, two bank accounts with money.

But like every Dee-Boy Kendrick, professed, this would be his last time. But one from the streets always knows that you should always follow your first mind. Your first instinct. But being a father and a dedicated partner to your mate, can knock you off your pivot. Then adding to that weight by promising to never let them struggle, and reassuring them that he'll always make it possible for them to have whatever it is they want. Takes a mighty toll. The words he spoke held the emotional whims that blurs the warning signs and kills a person that's security conscious perception. Remember, bringing emotions into those streets can kill you or cost you your life, and it cost KENDRICK MORTON just that.

On November 16,2004 Kendrick was up all night attending to his son screaming at the top of his lungs. He was teething. The scenario started about 3:04 a.m. in the morning, and it seemed like it would never stop. Only if he knew the changes that were about to come later in the day.

Tonya laid on they're bed out cold, and Kendrick wasn't going to wake her. She'd done all that with Ericka, and now it was his turn. It wouldn't be easy, he recognized that off the top. But Tonya and Kenderick had come to an agreement that he'd take on more daddy duties this time. So he'd spent all night dealing with De'von while she rested.

She had foundly woke up around 8:45 a.m. and had offered to make breakfast and take over the kids. While she was doing that Kendrick was able to shower, make a few calls and then sit down with his family to eat. Ericka had never taken to her booster seat. She had to sit on Daddy's knee and rock,it was the only way she'd sit still long enough to finish anything actually. Peeking continuously at his watch, Kendrick had noticed it was almost time to go press play on the drop. Something still kept nagging at him. But he brushed it off again though, and kissed Tonya and the kids and was off to attend to his business. He had to make a few stops and grab Dirt and Blacky, for security purposes and trigger men. But also, gas and pick up the product. 40 bricks (kilo's) of Columbia Peruvian flake,at 50,000$ each and 10 Micro Draco Ak-47 modified pistols at a street value of 1,350$ each. Wasn't an individual job. One had to have shooters and they had to be on point with discipline.

This drop would bring Kendrick at least $2,013,500 in cash. It was supposed to be an easy one and he'd dealt with the guy before plenty of times. But in these streets one has to remain very cautious. 12 (the police) would have a very hard time getting the drop on him cause he'd never used the same strategy twice. But he did always use a public establishment with a crowd of some sort. It gave him cover, mobility and the ability

At the last minute Kendrick picked the Ashby BART station, in Berkeley,California. Every Saturday and Sunday, since he could remember as a kid,the Ashby BART station parking lot had been turned into a full fledge flea market. It was packed normally with crowds, live music, and concession stands. He had pulled up and parked the guns and dope, smack dab in the middle of the flea market,in an all black Denali,on the front side of Martin Luther King Jr Street. Dirt and Ronni had come in separate black on black rented HellCats. Kendrick, phone rang immediately after he'd parked and exited the Denali. He picked it up after the third ring, but no one answered. His phone rang again,as he was placing it back into his pocket. He shouted,"hello" four times. And again, no one answered. He then felt a tightness in his chest, and a feeling jolt through him that made him really feel that something was off. He couldn't pinpoint it, as he pushed redial. But he could see Dirt and Ronni, lingering around their assigned posts. It wasn't them calling. Whoever it was, said nothing and just hung up. So he put his hand up and waved them both back towards him and he started to swiftly walk out of the BART station parking lot. Before Dirt and Ronni were even upon him,he had recognized that he was actually being followed. And then heard what he was dreading to hear. "Mr Morton, FBI,Freeze! Stop! "Put your hands up, "Do not move any further! "Lay down where you are and cross your legs and put your hand interlaced behind you now,"Mr.Morton! A whirlwind of emotions/images flooded through his head, his woman, his 2 kids, his freedom, and his life. It was all up in the air. Shit! How was he going to get out of this? 2 million in pure cocaine and 10 modifying machine guns. Wow! Shit,he knew it was about to be an uphill battle. He heard himself say it, " I should've just quit."That was one of the street hymns, when one from the streets gets jammed, the regret meter goes crazy in their head for not following the killer instincts code.

Kendrick's fight for his freedom…. Is just beginning….

Later on in the day, Kendrick Morgan, Doyle Brown, and Ronni Johnson, were all booked into the Santa Rita county jail in Dublin,California on 23 counts of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. Drug possession, smuggling, trafficking, distributing, manufacturing and cultivating.
And 10 counts of weapons chargers, with intent to sale, possession for sales, manufacture for sale of generally prohibited modified dangerous weapons, and firearms missing a serial/ID number.

The federal sentencing guidelines for drug trafficking are complicated, hard to interpret, and almost impossible to understand and apply if you’re not an experienced attorney. The sentence a court gives in any drug trafficking case will differ substantially depending on numerous factors, and only an experienced lawyer can tell you what might happen to you if you’re convicted.

For example, someone convicted of a first offense of trafficking in 500 – 4,999 grams of powdered cocaine faces between 5 and 40 years in prison, as well as fines of up to $5 million. However, if the crime resulted in someone being seriously injured or killed, the same person faces at least 20 years and up to life in prison. Further, if the person convicted of the crime has a prior conviction, that person faces 10 years to life in prison and up to $10 million in fines. If someone was hurt or killed as a result of the crime, the same person faces a minimum sentence of life imprisonment.

After booking and processing Kendrick was allowed to make a phone call. Of course he called Tonya. You have made it to a park and put on his leaning down and sat down at a table and put his hands in his head and knew that it was time for him to come Tanya. this is going to be the hardest conversation he had in his life. But he knew he had to. He made the call she picked up and she immediately started crying. she had felt this something that went wrong she had been calling all day and getting no answer that was very unusual. He had to explain to her every circumstance everything that transpired but he couldn't say everything and sense cuz he had to say things in code that he knew she wouldn't understand but this was the first time she was hearing about him selling guns. And she cried harder, and she asked him why? Why would you do this to us? Why wouldn't you listen? And Kenderick broke down and started crying also, he could also hear the kids crying in the background. He knew it was going to be hard times to come. He asked to speak to his babygirl, Ericka said, Daddy I miss you and I love you. And he responded, I love you babygirl Daddy loves you and misses you soooo much too. And he started to fall apart all over again.
