The Mid-night Of Independence Day
We have been waiting for this day. Our ancestors fought and some died in the rebellions against the British rule. Now we have to celebrate to please them, "their death weren't in vain. " We have celebrated it many times but this one looks unique because I now have a boyfriend. He has a sparkling bright eyes that make me want to see him every single second.

I just got him recently when Mom sent me to buy cooking oil. It started raining imminently I left home so as I ran to seek shelter we knocked each others down. He was sorry for what happened. His voice was like magic when he told me "sorry," before holding my hand and ran with me to a certain old abandon house.

He was 17 and I was 15 years but the love I had for him was much stronger and powerful than the love of those who are married. As we stood at the veranda, he couldn't look at me for 5 seconds without smiling.

"My name is Ogal, "he said.

"And I'm Atala, " I told him.

"Nice name, you look... you look cute."

"Thanks, you're handsome. "

We discussed alot about school, home and etc. From his countenance, I could tell he must be shy. In our tradition it's an abomination for a lady to tell a man "I love you. "A man must be the first to say because it's like a question, I love you? Which gives the lady the power to say, "yes, I love u too, " or "no, I'm not interested or whatever. "

I waited humbly for Ogal until it stopped raining and he said, "I...I... got to go, meet you next time. "He went, but it looked like he swallowed some words in his I...I... but? I now know his home and he knows our home, I just hope we meet again.

That was 4 days ago. Today I met him on my way to the well and he promised to take me out. "come in trousers. " he said, but I know I don't have one and couldn't pretend. "I don't have..." he said, "it's okay," before I could finish my sentence and gave me some large amount of money. I never expected such a lad to have money of that amount, "go and buy one."

Ever since that morning have just been imagining how we shall dance at the Uhuru(independence) party. How he would be holding my waist and tell me "I love you." It would be like we are in a paradise. The only thing worrying me was the trouser I send my friend Abang to buy may not fit me because I had big bums but she got small bums, I just pray she buys a good one. And also what time Mom would go to bed. She would never allow me to go out.

I was really surprised, she was moving up and down. It looked like she was going somewhere but she is always home on big days like this. Before I asked her she came to me and explained.

"Atala, my lovely daughter. Please, stay home tonight. As I told you sometime back, I've been dating Okullu who may soon be your step father. So I'm going to meet him and I beg that you stay home because it's dangerous to move at night, is it okay? "

"Yes, mom" I reponded, "what else could I say, " I said with my heart.

"If you go out you may meet thugs, rapist or even deadly animals, " which I knew would never happen as long as Ogal is by my side. She continued, "Promise me I'll get you home"

"I promise," but in my mind was, "I'll come back before you"

I then went in the house.
