The Girl in the Hat Part 1
Compton Woodland
5th September 1933
The breeze was calm, the air smelt of the summer flowers and the trees swayed quietly in the soothing wind. Every harvest wheat had gone from frowning to high of yellow filler, the birds continuously chirped with each other as they made their way from one twig to the other and this isolated but magnificently beautiful rural countryside in the middle lied a little girl of seven years with a white hat, long blonde hair and a buck tooth. She had tears trickling down her face and just in front of her laid an imposing and wonderful woodland and just behind her lay an endless isolated field. She had lived in this field since she was four years old and had managed to survive. It wasn't much for her to survive in this for she loved this area of the world for it seemed to agree with her emotionally and this little girl named Josephine was exceedingly poetic and the trees were a major inspiration. The way she got food would be by going for a walk in the woodland to check for safe berries and she learnt how to make a fire. Her brain was that of a genuis though she was socially awkward and if a person ever happened to spot her she would be able to convince them that she had parents and they had gone outside to be with a friend. When Josephine came nearing the woodland with it's green bushes, long skinny trees and howling sense of awe and wonder. As she entered this mysteriously adventurous looking woodland she came in sight of something extremely peculiar. Just ahead of her, as Josephine ducked behind a big bush, there were six shadows came out dancing an unusual dance. The front girl had long blonde hair, brown eyes and the three behind looked as if it could of been the oldest child's cousins or any other relatives. Josephine tried to keep her eye without them coming to witness that she was watching them. Josephine had no idea that there was any other children that lived nearby. Or maybe they came from far away for a picnic and their parents were outside of the woodland and granted them permission to come in and play here. As the trees twirled in the wind, Josephine stared at these unexpected people and then she felt a hand touch her shoulder. She looked up startled and it was the oldest child with the hat and blonde hair she had just seen. Josephine was confused but got up the courage to (nervously) say "Hello." slightly stuttering her words. The girl looked at Josephine like she was a symbol of something offensive. "Why are you here? What do you think your doing staring at us?!" she asked calmly but sternly. Josephine said, stuttering once more in her evidently nervous voice, "I
... I'm sorry. I just have never seen any other children round here before." The girl with the hat smiled and chuckled. "Neither did I." "Do you live here?" "Um, no... sorry I mean yes. I'm not too used to talking. I've always been very quiet." The girl with the hat smiled again "It's okay. You can play with us if you want." Josephine smiled, got up in a swift motion but then frowned. "No I'm sorry I have to go home." and then walked slowly back. The girl with the hat looked at her sensing that there was something wrong. The girl with the hat was as curious as Josephine was. And they both went their seperate ways, the girl with the hat towards the woodland and Josephine to the ever lasting field of thickened grass.
Fun fact: This is a test writing for The Woodland Children and this short story is inspired by something that happens within the book half way but this version is very different to The Woodland Children one.
