A young girl named May is riding her bike towards Littleroot Town to receive her first Pokémon from her father, Professor Birch. However, she muses that she would rather just travel and is not really interested in training a Pokémon.

Suddenly, a Duskull appears next to her and scares her. She speeds off, loses control, and crashes into a tree. She continues onward, before stopping briefly to take in the view when she reaches a cliff overlooking Littleroot Town.

Meanwhile, Ashley is also arriving in Littleroot Town but all she can think about is catching and training some new Pokémon in the Hoenn region.

"I can't wait to catch and train some new friends!" Ashley said as she hopped off the ship with her two Pokémon.

Elsewhere, May arrives just in time to see her father showing her a Treecko, the Wood Gecko Pokémon. But May thinks the Grass-type looks kind of scary.

Mudkip is next, but May says she doesn't know if she really wants it. Finally, her father reveals Torchic, a Fire-type Pokémon.

"I've made my decision on what type of starter I want to travel with." She said as she picks up Mudkip and decides that she will take the Water-type as her first Pokémon.

Birch gives her six empty Poké Balls and a Pokédex. She makes a few comments under her breath, her father wondering what she said before she tries to cover it up.

Outside, May releases Mudkip, and uses her Pokédex on the Mud Fish Pokémon. "Mudkip, the Mud Fish Pokémon. Mudkip uses the sensitive fin on its head to take radar readings of its surroundings." The device said.

Later, her father and Joshua inform the pair that their next destination should be Oldale Town's Pokémon Center to register for the Hoenn League.

The pair waves goodbye to the Professor and his assistant before beginning their walk towards Oldale Town.
