Love Of Madness
Love Of Madness

There was something in the air today. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but Charlie was used to leading a bizarre life. She reached into the mailbox in hopes that her package had finally arrived. The mailman was as disappointing as her family felt about her life choices. Her arm disappeared into the metal box as if reaching for the end. No amount of searching could relinquish the desired object. How long could it possibly take to send a custom snow globe featuring Shrek???

Walking up the driveway now proved a daunting task. The twenty degree slope had now become Mt. Everest. She made her way to the front door and hesitated. This is where things usually got interesting. Beyond this door was the cause of the insanity of each day.

She had met Gavin at a church hockey game. Why a church needed a hockey team was beyond comprehension in its self, but the strange man on the ice immediately drew her gaze. He was a handsome man, though not what most would call a physical specimen. He had a disarming smile and eyes that seemed to hold information the world wasn't ready for. He was skating on ice in shorts and a tank top as if they were playing basketball. Perhaps the strangest part was that he had absolutely no affiliation with the church whatsoever.

As the congregation filed in, the pastor tired to pretend he was just another lamb that had wondered into the flock. The game began with the normal teams but they wanted to include the stranger so they put Gavin on the team called The Holy Rollers. The other team , led by the pastor, was called The Vengeful Sheperds. It became very clear that Gavin had no intention of being limited by such backwards thinking as to be confined to a team. He checked his own players as often as the opposing team and didn't really seem to be playing to win. A complete oddity.

Charlie approached him afterwards and commented on his unique playing style. He merely replied with, "Anyone can pick a team and become orderly, but an element of chaos can sure liven things up. Wouldn't you agree?"

She was enamored by the answer. Though he appeared to be about 20 years older, she found herself drawn to what he might say next. It turned out his aunt Mildred was a member of the congregation but seemed reluctant to claim her nephew at this point in the evening. They exchanged numbers and life changed very quickly.

He liked to hike and be in nature. Charlie loved camping but he hadn't ever been. He also liked visiting random playgrounds whenever the mood was right and if the moon was full, this man became hypnotized. He was an adult with his life together but who never seemed to lose the wonder of being a child.

It was no surprise that she was drawn to him and wanted to be a more involved part of his life, so they started dating. Of course her parents and friends didn't agree. She was only twenty two years of age and he was fourty one. He was friendly enough and charming as can be, but they questioned his interests in her as if he were some kind of pervert preying on young women.

In actuality, he was just a gentle soul and the closer they got the more drawn together they seemed to be. Though odd, they balanced each other in ways that made things work. After about a year they rented a house together. The man was pure madness. His mind was a playground and he wasn't worried about what others thought.

He had theories about how Noah's Ark was a space ship sent to escape Mars before life on the planet had collapsed and how the Martians were forced to breed with the ape-like creatures on Earth to start the evolution into modern man. This explained how man's evolution happened so quickly. He would always say, "They can't prove me wrong!!!"

He would make random crafts on household objects. One of their dining room chairs was built into a Lincoln Memorial and the chandelier seemed to sprout out of an upside down Washington Monument. He renamed the kitchen. Kitchengtin D.C . Other monuments and sights would follow. He had sunflower paintings all through the house and loved to eat mustard on everything. In his study, there was a violin and a sword propped up on his desk chair. Charlie never asked why. She never knew what surprises were lying in store from moment to moment and she loved it.

Reaching for the doorknob, she finally decided to enter the house. Sitting in the middle of the living room, on an apparently new coffee table, was a forty gallon fish tank filled with milk. He was in the middle of dumping a whole box of Cookie Crisp into it with one hand while holding a slotted mixing spoon in the other. She also noticed he was watching Spice World again. The man had an obsession with the Spice Girls due to his love of their music and this movie.

"Hello love!", he aid as she entered, "I hope you don't mind I made us dinner."

Charlie laughed loudly as he gave his knowing smile. He had said many times that he loved that smile and would go to any lengths to see it every day. As if the fish tank wasn't enough, there were fourteen stuffed penguins in a line on their couch who seemed just as interested in the movie as he was. The stuffed zebra was in the corner. He had evidently made disparaging remarks about Sporty and he was being punished for his lack of vision. She wrapped her arms around Gavin. He pulled her close so he could smell her hair. She knew he loved her smell. After exchanging a quick kiss she sat down beside him and noticed a second spoon. They began eating the ungodly mass of cereal joking about who would drink the milk.

She was in love. Everything about this man made her day brighter. Neither cared that the world judged them for their love. They'd never been more happy. "So, Gavin. I have a very important question for you.."

He wiped away the milk dribble from his chin and asked, "What is it my sweet little sugarplum?"

"Will you marry me Gavin?"

"Honey. I thought you'd never ask....."
