A Wrong Turn (a n0ir)
#WritcoStoryChallenge
The car sped through the dark night, it's headlights flashing, warning the incoming traffic to get out of the way.

The wail from the cop car in the distance kept me continuing frantically onward. I couldn't believe I had gotten myself in this deep. All because of those raven eyes. They had looked my way and begged me to save them. Little did I know then that the one that needed saving was me.

Backtrack

It all started when I walked into the boarding house and asked for a room. The landlady who was about to show me to a room got sidetracked by a ringing phone. I stood tapping my foot impatiently while running a hand through my unruly brown locks.

The sound of a clock ticking in the foyer across the way was working on my migraine. Then I heard another sound. A sound of footsteps on the staircase leading up to the rooms. I glanced up to see an angel descending. She was stunningly beautiful, this angel. Her eyes and hair were dark as night and her skin like porcelain. She looked at me questionly for a moment then looked away as she bounded down the stairs past me and out the door.

"Mr Smith? Mr Smith sir. I don't have all day. Do you want to see the room or not."the aggravated landlady spat.

Apparently I had gone to la la land in the angels wake and left Miss Impatient hanging. My how the tables had turned.

"Why yes, I most definitely would like to Miss Im..erm Miss Emerson. Lead the way."

After getting the full tour of the boardinghouse and the eating schedule I went to my car to retrieve my bags. My plan was to settle into my room and sleep until dinner. It had been a long drive. As I approached my car I could hear arguing coming from a gazebo situated in a garden not to far from the house.

"Lovely!" my mind and my migraine thought. What could that be all about. "Whatever."I was determined to mind my own business.

Then the angel stormed from the gazebo followed by a big lug of an angry fellow. It was on. I didn't even know her name but the look in his eyes and the way she was moving told me I had to intervene.

He was a big guy. Me, not so much. I knew this would end badly. All I could say was I must've been a man possessed.

"Hey Angel. Is this man bothering you? If so I can be of assistance." I smirked at the shocked expression on both of their faces.

"Lucky, who is this idiot and why is he calling you angel?the lug said.
"Who I am is not as important as why you're manhandling this delicate flower."

The lug was sizing me up and came back satisfied that he could probably wipe the floor with me.

"This so-called delicate flower owes me. Until I collect I will make her life a living hell."

I reached for my wallet and said "I'm sure I can pay you whatever is owed to leave her be."

"What she owes you could never pay."he addressed me then nodded towards Lucky. "As for you, I will be back for you tonight."

We watched him get into his black sporty two door that matched his black suit and overall black mood. He tipped his hand in our direction then sped off.

I turned to see Lucky crying into her hands. " Do you want to talk about it?"

" It's a long story."she said dabbing at her smoky eyes.

"Do you want to talk about it over coffee then?"

She laughed a throaty laugh and my heart went haywire. We didn't end up getting coffee. Instead we went back to the boardinghouse and had lemonade and sandwiches in the kitchen.

She told me about her life as a child growing up in this sleepy town. As she got older all she dreamed about was getting out. Finally her chance had come but she had to make a deal with Lucien. She had to bring him something he wanted. Tonight was the deadline.

I asked if I could help her. She just insisted that I already had. She wouldn't explain what she meant by that but I would learn what later.

End of the Road

I sat up straight in bed. I had been awakened from a sweet dream of the angel and I dancing like fred and ginger. What had awakened me? A loud bang.

After that came the sound of Lucky yelling. I jumped from my bed and ran down the hall past Miss Emerson who was standing there hair in curlers and hand over heart.

" Mr Smith he stormed in here and slammed Lucky's door in my face."she shouted after me. "I can't have this in my home."

Ignoring her I shouldered into the door twice before it sprang open. The scene in Lucky's room was not at all good. Lucien and Lucky were struggling over a gun that she had in her hand.

I inserted myself between to two of them and broke them apart. Lucky still had the gun in her hand and was aiming it at the lug. I couldn't let her shoot him so I grabbed at the gun. Ironically we were now struggling with the gun. She squeezed the trigger and the gun went off.

There was a thud. There was another thud, then dead silence. Lucien had fallen dead to the floor. Right afterwards the gun had followed. We were both staring at each other in shock.

Miss Emerson entered the room and cried out."Oh my god!"

Lucky doubly shocked me when she turned to Miss Emerson and said."I tried to stop him."

"What?"I cried.

" He was obsessed with me and he killed my boyfriend."

" I was trying to help you."

Miss Emerson sounded fidgety and confused as she said."Mr Smith during all the ruckus I called the police. They are on their way now. I think we should just wait and let them sort this out."

"Sort what out. I've been duped. She set me and lucien up for a fall."

Lucky turned her back to me. Miss Emerson stepped back out the door further into the hall. I had to get out of here. The cops would take me away for Luciens death. I was sure of this. I ran out the door knocking Miss Emerson out of the way.

Dead End

The wailing from the cop car got louder. I realized we were about to meet up like two ships sailing in the night. I had to get off this road before they spotted me. I kicked up dust as I swerved down a dirt road off from the highway. Maybe that is what helped them latch onto my trail. I was doomed. I had been tricked by an angel who was the devil in disguise.

I had come to this town to get away from the noise of a city that was driving me mad. I had hoped to start over. I guess we had that in common.

Whatever trouble I had gotten her out of I hope it was worth it.

I hope she did make it out of this town. My only way out now was a cliff up ahead and I was going to take it.
