We Didn't Know
#writcostorychallenge

The car sped through the dark night, it’s head lights flashing, warning the incoming traffic
as he cut across the median to execute a U turn. He couldn’t miss that exit. Her screams of
pain were reverberating through the car so loudly his ears began to ring. And, my goodness,
there was blood now. Trying his best not to freak out, Azar steps on the gas a little harder.
He releases a great breath of relief as the hospital comes into sight. But seeing his wife’s,
Tisha, whole body shake with the amount of pain and tension she’s experiencing steals that
small reprieve. With no time to waste he jumps from the car and runs into the front doors
screaming
“Help! Somebody help us she’s in so much pain!”
Tisha’s cries of agony reach the ears of the nurses as they rush out with a gurney and
quickly get her to a room in the back. Azar hears an ambulance in the distance and knows
he must move the car. Trying not to panic as his wife leaves his eyesight, he drives off to
find the nearest spot.
“There’s so much pressure” she screams laying there gripping her stomach.
And though her stomach is relatively flat the nurse knows to check it. And with a nod to the
other nurse, she instructs
“Okay everybody she’s in active labor. A baby is definitely on the way.”
“I can’t be pregnant. I’m on birth control” Tisha stutters out before another contraction
snatches her body tight.
“Birth control or not it’s time to push,” the doctor that checks her progression states. “The
top of this baby’s head is right here we can see hair mom. So, on three give it all you got.”
Azar follows the screams of his wife and is utterly astonished as he walks in on her giving
birth. But the blood and the sight of a head hanging from her is overwhelming. Immediately,
the corners of his vision fade to black and he sees a nurse glance over and reach for him as
he’s lost to darkness.
“The father’s down” the nurse informs as the doctor stays focused on the mother and baby.
“Ok,” the doctor says to mom “the heads out. give us another push.”
The nurse waves smelling salts under Azar’s nose, bringing him back from the faint. And
then helps him into a chair nearby. Out of the way of the incubator.
Then an amazing thing happens. The wondrous little cry of a new life pierces the room.
“It’s a boy” the doctor says as the nurses converge on the child checking all types of vitals
and measurements.
"Is he…is he okay? We didn’t know.” Azar asks while getting up to grab his wife’s hand.
“Yes. 5lbs and 10oz of healthy baby. But his lungs will need a little more time to develop.”
The nurse says placing him into the incubator and hooking him to oxygen.
“Let’s name him after you,” Tisha slurs to her husband before going eerily limp. Azar grips
her hand tighter as her vitals go haywire and the machines monitoring her blare alarms.
Azar hears the doctor in what seems like a far-off voice say,
“She’s going into cardiac arrest. Quickly ….”
Azar is pushed back from the bed. Losing contact with Tisha’s hand as a flurry of action
that he can’t quite process blurs around him. Only the distinct sound of her flat lining cuts
through the fog before he faints again.
