Bunga
Bunga

Bunga was a skunk that lived in a meadow with a village far away in a valley. Bunga was a beautiful ginger colored skunk. She was different from all the other skunks. She has the wisdom and loyalty of a canine. She has the most beautiful bushy tail of all. She had spotted rows going down her back instead of white stripes like the other skunks.
The sun was shining bright. Bunga was having a relaxing day in the meadow sniffing flowers and having treats by digging with her claws for grub worms. Yum yum!
She saw movement coming towards her but couldn’t see what it was from the height of the field flowers. She fluffed her tail ready to attack. Closer and closer it came. Whatever it was she saw a blackness peering through pushing through the field coming towards her. She was prepared to spray. She saw a head then a body. She sighed in relief. It was just her brother Zorrillos. “Whatcha up to out here alone” he said. “Just enjoying the sun and flowers and the the yummy grub worms. Why do you always have to come and check up on me”? Zorrillos replied “ Because I love you”. Said her brother “Well join me for some snacks” Bunga said. They ate then played a game of chase in the flowers. When they tiered it was time to go home to their tiny cave. There was a neighborhood of caves. All in a row. The skunks stuck together. During the day they had started hearing strange noises. They sounded like monsters. The noises scared the skunks and sometimes the earth would quake and loud noises would boom so loud it would shake inside their caves.
Evil spirits they were. But why or who had cursed them?
One day Bunga and her brother Zorrillos were on the edge of the field playing chase when they looked to see where they heard a loud boom! They saw a yellow monster! It was big! It had round things on the bottom. A square thing on the top and a giant scoop in the front. It was the scariest thing Bunga and Zorrillos had ever seen! They sprayed out of fear ! They turned and ran home as fast as they could! They told their mother and she called for a town meeting. The elders were called in. It was decided that everyone would meet tonight for the ritual of protection dance.
That night the elders gathered in the center of the field. They lit a bonfire. All the elders held a torch. The elders formed a circle while the youth stood behind them. They all fluffed their tails. The elders chanted ancient chants of protection. They rotated left then right around the circle as they chanted. They youth fell behind following the elders round the bonfire. The ritual lasted until the wee hours of the night. The torches were exstinguished and everyone headed back to their caves. They all rested feeling safe for the night.
The rising of the warm sun. Bunga stepped outside. It was a beautiful day for the meadow. She felt for sure the monster was gone. Her brother still slept. She headed to the meadow. There she smiled at the beautiful flowers. She just knew they were smiling back. Breakfast time! Time to dig for some fat grub worms! Yum yum! Just as she was digging she felt the earth rumble and a loud BOOM! Oh no! The monster! He’s still here! Some kind of curiosity and up inside Bunga. She wanted to see if the monster was still at the edge of the field. So she headed to the edge. There she saw the monster but now there were four of them! And they were a lot closer than that one was the day before. The field had been eaten by the monsters. Bunga ran home to tell her mother and brother. They were scared. Four monsters! And they had eaten some of the field. Where did these monsters come from? What to do? What if they eat us? The whole town was worried and in a frenzy! They called another town meeting. The elders were stumped. Their ritual had not worked. They told the town there was nothing more they could do. The town would just have to hope the monsters kept their distance. Bungas mother forbids her and brother from playing in the field. But of course curiosity couldn’t stop them. The next day Bunga and Zorriillos went to the field. They walked to the field just close enough where they were still hidden in the field. What the saw was horrible! They saw a fleet of these monsters all in a row and some in the field. A quarter of the field was gone from where the monsters had ate it. They ran and ran home fast! But this time they did not tell what they had seen. This was too terrible to get everyone upset about. They hung around the house all day. The next day they went to the field. It was a horrid sight. Bunga and Zorrillos cried. The ground was rumbling non stop. Half of the field was gone. They ran home stumbling the whole way back. They told mother what they had seen. Then mother put her head in her paws and started crying. The monsters she said “ We have got to leave. Those monsters are gonna eat us alive. They will eat up all the field. Then what? US”! Mother bawled and bawled. “Where do we go….where do we go? Where will home be for us”? The next day Bunga and Zorrillos and mother walked through the field. They saw the monsters eating the field. This time it was worse. Three fourths of the field was gone. They ran all the way home with the earth shaking. Mother contacted the elders and requested a town meeting. Mother spoke “ The monsters have eaten three fourths of the field. Soon they will be here to eat us! We have to leave”! “Where are we to go?” Asked one of the neighbor skunks. Mother replied “ well across the field and across the road then across the other field are more caves we will be safe there”. So that was the plan then. They would prepare to leave in the morning then. When the next morning came Bungas family was prepared as well as the whole neighborhood. Everyone only took the basic necessities. Off they went. To the field. The field was almost totally gone. They ran through what little of field was left. The skunks that had not seen the monsters trembled with fear at the sight of them. They made it to the road. The decided to go one by one across the street was safest. So one of the neighbors went first. They made it ! Piece of cake ! So neighbor after neighbor made it. Finally it was time for Bungas family. Bunga went first and made it. Bungas mother went and made it. Time for hurt brother Zorrikkos turn. He made it halfway across and a truck came around the corner so fast there was no way he could have made it in time. He was killed instantly. His mother squealed in pain. His sister screamed a bloody scream. He was the last to go and the only one who didn’t survive. There was sorrow for all the skunks. They all tread slowly through the field. It was a long trek. The field was huge! Very high wild flowers. The neighborhood was in awe of all the beautiful colors. They trekked quitely when they finally arrived to their caves. They were all so relieved. But still grieving the loss of Zorrillia. Yes that would take time. The neighborhood picked their caves. They happily lived out their lives. Playing in their field with wildflowers and eating grub worms. Yum yum!
