The Cry in the Dark
#WritcoStoryPrompt9
As I walked past the dark bushes, the night was quiet except for the distant sound of crickets chirping. Suddenly, a faint cry pierced through the silence, making me stop in my tracks. I strained my ears to listen, wondering if it was just my imagination playing tricks on me.

But then I heard it again, louder this time, and unmistakably human. Someone was in trouble, and they needed help. My heart raced as I debated whether to investigate or continue on my way home. It was late, and the bushes looked ominous in the moonless night.

I hesitated for a moment, but my conscience wouldn't let me leave someone in need. With a deep breath, I stepped closer to the bushes and called out, "Is anyone there? Do you need help?"

There was no answer, but the cry came again, louder and more desperate. It seemed to be coming from deep within the thicket, and my heart sank as I realized that whoever was in trouble was well hidden.

I took a deep breath and pushed my way through the thorny branches, wincing as they scratched my arms and face. The cry grew louder with every step, until I finally emerged into a small clearing.

There, lying on the ground, was a young woman, her face twisted in pain. She had clearly been attacked, and her clothes were torn and bloodied. I rushed to her side, calling for an ambulance as I tried to stem the bleeding.

As we waited for help to arrive, the woman told me what had happened. She had been walking home from a late shift at the local diner when she was attacked by a group of men who had dragged her into the bushes. She had managed to fight them off, but not before they had wounded her.

My heart ached for her, and I stayed by her side until the ambulance arrived to take her to the hospital. As they loaded her into the back, she looked up at me and whispered, "Thank you. You saved my life."

I walked away from the scene, still reeling from what had just happened. The cry in the dark had led me to someone in desperate need, and I had been able to help. It was a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope.
