Chapter 1
Hailey climbed each stair purpose filled. With each step she took the more adamant she grew to fulfill her desired intentions. The effects it would pose on her poor father had her mind wavering for the entire fifteen minutes she spent in the kitchen. She clutched the tray fiercely trying to steady the noisome tremors from her mother's finest chinaware. Nearing the door to her father's room she grew sickened by the thought of causing more heartache to her father. With her right hand clenched in a tight fist she gently knocked the door, it creaked open 'it wasn't closed' she thought...
She glanced at her father laying very still in bed, he seemed frozen.
"Papa?" she whispered
His head turned so he could look at her.
He nodded and she immediately walked towards his bedside. Hailey placed the tray on the table and knelt beside his bed, she dared not let him see the agony in her eyes, so she burrowed her head at his side and held his hand as she did every morning.
With his hand shaking vigorously Wilfred touched his daughter's head. She slowly lifted her head.
"Yes papa?" she asked choking back a sob.
Wilfred peered into her eyes sorrowfully, his heart always broke when he looked at Hailey, her auburn curls reminded him of the days when in his youth he truly had happiness, now God had forsaken him to the dreadful life. As he looked into her oceanic eyes he could see that there were waves of distress threatening to consume her, something was wrong.
Just then Mildred walked in, and like a lioness defending her prey the hair on Hailey's neck stood on end.
"Hailey ...
"You're awake. I thought you would muck out the stalls this morning." Mildred said in a sing song voice, she was rather chirpy.
"I did" was all Hailey said and the atmosphere suddenly changed. 'I won't add salt to my father's wounds but a little discomfort will indeed do you some good mama' she thought to herself.
"I quickly got out of there as a stallion was mounting a mare around back and the moaning was rather annoying." Her father's eyebrow quireked, she knew none of this made much sense to him, horses moaning?
"Uh, quite the vulgarity Hailey, who taught you such a word?"
"I'm sure you have a lot of chores to get around to so please leave you're father he needs to have his breakfast" The panic was evident in her voice as she spoke, she flung an uncertain look at Hailey, what did she really hear this morning.
"As you wish mother." she kissed her father and sauntered out of the room. She knew she just opened up a can of worms.
