house flies

I was thinking about house flies the other day, because that's how i am. Shit just pops into my head at the most random times. I could be sitting in a room listening to the doctor tell me, "hey, you need to quit smoking or you're going to die in 4 minutes," and my brain will be like, "pssst. Hey....house flies. right?" Then I'll be all, "right! House flies! What's their story?"
It got me thinking about the name "house fly." Why are they called house flies? Because they're always in the house. Animals and insects have been around since the planet formed, so i can only assume house flies were around then too, but there were no houses, so what were they called? Everywhere flies? Then eventually they were called cave flies, tipi flies, igloo flies? Evolution's gonna evolution and eventually they were in houses. "These flies are in the house! They're everywhere in the house! These HOUSE flies are all over the HOUSE!!!"
House flies. What's the deal here?
I have so many questions. Like, if you see a house fly outside, is it homeless?
If you see one in an apartment is it an apartment fly? If there's one buzzing around the mall, is it a mall fly? Does its name adapt to the environment it's in?
I'm not clear on the rules about these creatures because if there was a house fly outside flying around a puddle and someone said, "there's a house fly" and a logical smartass such as myself heard it, I'd reply, "it's not in a house. How can it be a house fly if it's standing on a log? Are you sure that's not a log fly?"
And that's usually the reason people don't like going out into nature with me.
