TALONS (Forces of the Underworld story 4)
FORCES OF THE UNDERWORLD (STORY 4)

TALONS

The biker sat near the woods on the outskirts of the camp. He was cutting cocaine into lines on a small mirror. The biker heard a sound and looked up. Behind a tree he could see a teenage boy peering out at him. It must be one of the local Mohawks he thought. He smiled and waved the boy over. "It's alright, kid. Sit with me. Try some of this."

Some time later a man named Goodleaf found the boy, Darpak, wandering around town in a daze. He brought him home to his mother, Ajala. He was in such a state Ajala completely panicked. She laid him in his bed and wiped the sweat from his brow with a wet cloth. He was in pain, clutching his stomach and his head. Goodleaf fetched a bowl that Darpak was sick in several times.

"What's wrong with him?" Ajala asked.

"Drug overdose, I reckon." Goodleaf said.

"That can't be right. There's a zero tolerance of drugs here."

"I know, Ajala. But there's a biker gang camped up near by."

"What!? What the hell are they doing here?"

"Just passing through and stopped to rest, I think."

Ajala called a doctor, tried different herbal medicines and anything else she could think of but in the end all she could do was watch as her son died. She screamed, fell to her knees and sobbed beside the bed. Goodleaf started speaking to Darpak's body, telling him he'd died and had to prepare for his transition to the other world.

Dina and Jay rode their Harley Davidson's into the Supernatural Bureau of Investigation headquarters car park. The first time Dina had seen a motorbike was in the tv series "Sons of Anarchy". She had been in awe. She was determined to ride one similar to the ones in the show. Jay had offered to learn with her. He remembered when he'd told her "They could help each other understand this world together." So they'd set out to learn and they had loved it.

They parked their bikes next to John's Raptor pick up truck, then headed to the SBI HQ building. The building had a sign for a business that was a front, hiding what they were really doing. If people knew the truth that supernatural beings existed there would be a mass panic.

They entered via a side door, punching in a code for access. They walked passed people sat at computers, greeting them with a nod. They were making a beeline for the bosses office. Jay knocked on the door.

"Enter," a deep voice resonated from inside. Jay opened the door and they both stepped in joining John and Zack already sat at the desk.

"Now you're all here, I'll give you the brief." Cheif Dubois spoke with only a slight French accent. "A Burning Halos biker gang decided to set up camp in the Mohawk territory in Quebec by the St Lawrence river. Three of the bikers were seriously injured in an unprovoked attack by an owl."

"An owl attacked three people for no reason? That is strange, not exactly supernatural though," John said.

"That's what I thought," Dubois replied. "That is until a researcher pointed out that there is a mythology about medicine men who can turn into owls."

"Bit far fetched," said John.

"Maybe. Maybe not. But we have three badly injured men in hospital. The bikers are sticking around for their friends to heal up. And the local community is not happy about it. It's a potential powder keg. I think it's worth looking into. John and Zack, you'll pose as writers doing research on Mohawk culture and mythology. Jay, Dina, you'll infiltrate the gang and find out what's going on. Any questions?"

As the four of them came out the building, Zack asked: "Do you think Tim and Jen regret turning down all this excitement?"

Jay shook his head. "No. They have a happy life, safe in England. They had no reason to give that up for this."

"What about you? You could have gone back with them."

"I miss my friends. But now I've found something worth doing with my life. And someone who relates to me to do it with," Jay smiled at Dina who smiled back.

"I wish I hadn't asked. I'm going to throw up," Zack covered his mouth and pretended to retch.

John shoved him, "Don't be a dick, Zack!"

Zack laughed and they headed towards their vehicles.

Hours later Jay and Dina were riding by the St Lawrence river. Jay's Harley "Chopper Fire Ride" was shiny black and painted with an orange flame. Dina rode a "Breakout" Candy Red Harley. They slowed their speed as they came towards the bikers campsite. They parked up as bikers noticed their arrival.Tents were set up all over a large space of grass. A campfire was burning in the middle, where leather clad men, with big beards and tattoo sleeves cooked food. Jay was grateful that the meat wasn't burnt. That would have brought back the memory of an event he'd sooner forget.

A man wearing a red bandanna with the Burning Halos symbol, approached them. "Are you two lost?"

"Nope. We're looking to join," Jay said.

"Really? And why would we need you?"

"I have contacts you'd be interested in doing business with. People who have certain goods that need delivering."

"I see..."

Dina decided to speak up: "You know, angels don't actually have halos, let alone burning ones."

Jay shot Dina a warning glance and she shuffled awkwardly.

The man in the bandanna said: "She's not quite right is she?"

"No. She isn't. But I love her."

"I know what you mean, man. My girl is crazy as they come but there's nothing I wouldn't do for her. My names Jacob. I'm the leader of this motley crew. You can join us on a trial basis. We'll see if your contacts are legit."

"We're hoping to write a novel, with your permission, based on your community, culture and mythology. We'd especially like to talk to your local medicine man, if possible?"

"This is...
