Barbed wires and pigeons
With hitlers attack on poland the second world war was on it's way I remember back then I used to work as a war correspondent for radio club of bombay
I had travelled egypt in 1939 , libya in 1940
while remained in Britain from 41 to 43 and in india in 1944 now they want me in berlin to cover stalin's invasion of berlin
I flied berlin on January 1945 few months before the event and on the illfaith date of 16th april stalin's ussr invaded berlin I remember that day I suddenly waked up around 3 am a morning on sound of a war siren and a microphone which was announcing " nazi bruders kampe fur dich furher kampfe bis zum letzten atemzug "
which means nazi brothers fight for your furher (Hitler) fight till your last breath
it was now clear that axis have lost war and hitler is counting his final days but it was just because of his greed the city of berlin
had turned into a a hell .
5days later
it was 21st april me last day of work because the goverment had called the media because situations can get worse but before that me and my colleauge Prateek were driving in the streets of berlin in night the houses were burnt dead bodies were lieing in the streets of the city
god knows how many mothers have lost their son how on childrens have lost their parents how may womens have been raped
while all this was going on my mind suddenly a girl came in front of our car she was exhausted her face was dark because of smoke and the worst thing on that was she cant spoke me and prateek quickly took her to the media quarters I washed her face she was beautiful her eyes were big and glittering but she was not normal her age was around 18 or 19 but her behaviour was kind of childish but she could understand what was going on around her at first we failed to understand what she was saying as she was mute finally prattekk gave her a pen and paper to write she wrote " she wrote "mein name ist karin vor ein par tagen Mein eletren wurde getotet durch Russians und schuester werdi vergiewaltagit Mein leben werdi gerettet durch umalaut nun aus umlaut ortilche kircher " it means few days ago my parents were killed by russians and my sister was raped my life was saved by a nun of a local church althought she cant speak but I could observe the tears in her eyes and somehow could relate it since my single mom was killed in 41 by bombing in london it's really hurts to see your loved ones die infront of your face . after this both me and prateek had decided we will stay here and help her to get out of this place .
after a week
with the help of our known sources back in india we were able to extend our stay but the goverment was forcing us to comeback because the belived the situation can get worst . it was a morning of 28th april I was inside my room playing with karin when suddenly prateek entered
I looked at him say " what did they say "
he replied " the british embassy told that it's impossible for them to gave someone from axis a shelter until the war is going on it can cause international pressure "
"well cant they just deport her in a safe place "I said prateek shook his head while me and prateek was thinking what to do with her suddenly a stranger enters and pointed at me and said there is a letter for you I quickly rushed out of the door but when I entered my speed was slow my eyes were filled with tears prateek noticed this he asked me" what happend " I gave him the letter and broke away in tears in it was written that my fiance have died in a car accident by seeing me in that condition karin came close to me and started shaking my body as if she was asking what happend honestly speaking I really got annoyed and pushed her with such a force that her back was strucked against the wall and there was bag with her which falled down with all the papers inside and she began to cry after realizing what I have just did i quickly rushed to her and said " I am sorry karin ahh es tut mir lied " pls pardon pardon.... " prateek was also their in the room he picked up the fallen papers from karin 's bag and immedialty called me " hey see come here " he pulled my hands see this he said I observed those papers it was somewhat secret offical nazi papers signed by hitler himself both us looked at each other he said " you know na we are in trouble " I didn't paid any attention turned around to karin and asked her " karin where did you get this from I mean did someone gave you this ( in german )" tell me dont be scared and handed her a paper she wrote " the nun who saved me gave me this and she told me not to open this on any situation ( in german ) " after hearing this I stared at Prateek and he took me in a corner and said " you know it does not seems right but we should handover this papers and this girl to the russians and leave this place immediatly " I replied with anger " what have you gone mad they will kill her " he replied ya I know but I dont want to be killed myself " I replied " you can go if you want but I'm staying here I will not leave her to die here I have already lost my fiancee now I cant lose her " my eyes were filled with tears as I said this prateek observed this and said " dont tell me you have started loving her " I replied " I dont know but one thing is sure I am not leaving " ok then stay here prateek said and went to his room
later that night prateek knocked my door and informed me that he was leaving before he left he gave me a gun for my protection and he left so it was just me and that girl
I knew that I cant take her out form here just like that so I have decided to marry her atleast if it helps her to get out of here so I told here " karin will you marry me " with a rose in my hand she didn't replied and looked outside the window she wrote " why do you want to marry me I will get you into trouble they will kill you if you marry me and i know you dont love me you are just sympathized with me " I have never seen karin do such a mature talk I replied" know I really I love you " she turned around and hugged me as if she was saying dont leave me she was crying I guess prateek was right I have really started loving this girl
the very next day I took her to the registration court and we got married while getting out from the court we saw a pigeon struck inside a barbed wire she quickly rushed and freed it I was amazed how can someone be so innocent after facing all this

ok so I have brought a 2 tickets to india and now me and karin were finally leaving she was very happy I could tell from her face but things didn't went as planned as I have thinked while getting out from the quarters we encountered a group of russian forces the situation was tensed as hitler was dead and karin started to behave awkwardly infront of them she had hidden her face behind my back the officer came close to us and said " what do you want "I said " nothing sir we are just leaving this place i am from a indian press "
he replied staring at karin " who is she "
I replied " my wife " he replied " she does not looks like an indian what's her nationality " I replied with avoiding his eyes and looking at my watch as if I dont care "poland " he said " ok go " as if I thought everything is sorted out abother russian officer identified her and said " hey she is that same girl from that church catch her she got some secret documents we need them "they quickly charged us and punched me in my stomach and draped karin to their van by pulling her hair "I quickly counterd their assault and put the gun that prateek gave me on head of an officer " they became tensed and replied put your gun down " I replied no first leave her and throw your guns other wise I will kill him " it worked they throwed their guns and left karin I quickly grabbed her hand runned away from them .
we were hiding in a bunker we knew that they will kill us if they found us everything was over but I dont have any regret I did what I had to do what my heart told me to do but the only thing that makes me sad is that I failed to save her as I was thinking this I could see alliance planes flying in the skies of berlin I knew what's going to happen next both me and karin hugged each other and closed our eyes
