Today in my blog I am sharing an inspiring story on our career titled
Have we made it to the top?".
This is one incident Mr Bhatia can never forget. Mr. Bhatia held a senior consultant position in HR department and had just finished his annual reviews. He had the list of employees who were to be given their promotion letters.
All was going well, until he called this guy to talk to him about a new opportunity. It was a promotion from his current role and he had the right skills & qualifications."Sorry but I'm not interested,"_ the candidate politely said.
Mr.Bhatia pressed him on it until he said something that really confused him. He said that he had, "already made it to the top".
Mr. Bhatia was familiar with his current role and looked at his CV again. This candidate wasn't anywhere near the top. He would have needed binoculars to see the top. He wasn't even a Senior Manager yet.
He explained to Mr.Bhatia that "making it to the top", for him, meant he loved the exact work he did each day, he loved his company, he was treated fairly and with respect, he made enough money to be comfortable, he had excellent benefits, he had flexibility and most importantly to him, he never missed a single sports game, school play, parent-teacher conference, anniversary, birthday, or any family event he even had time for reunion & club meetings..He knew what taking the next step in his career meant. More time, travel, & sacrifice."Not worth it," he said.
Lessons Learnt & Reflection.
Our definition of "making it to the top", doesn't have to be society’s or anyone else's definition to praise us.
An aspiration in life to make it to the top, we all live with.The secret is, it is in your hands to do it ,only thing needed, is our vision to define what is the "top" for us.
Life has become a race and in this, we have forgotten to live life! The sad part is, by the time we want to live, its too late. We often argue & justify ourselves by saying, it is for the family, to give our kids a good future, that we are working so hard. But the reality is, if we cannot enjoy time with our family & close friends when they are still there, what is the fun?
