Reading Fluency Tip
Read in phrases. Some people call this scooping words in phrases as a fun way to remember it. Focus on who, did what, where, when and any add on phrases. This is a great balance to keep you from reading too slow, one word at a time or too fast. Remember, comprehension should always come first in reading. It’s not a speed reading competition! Sometimes the author will show you where the phrases are. For example, commas to show where you should pause slightly, or periods or other punctuation like exclamation points or question marks for the end of sentences. For really long sentences, it’ll be up to you to break it up into the right phrase. A good tip to remember is to see what goes together as if you were having a conversation. To begin, you can draw imaginary scoop lines with your finger (U shapes instead of straight across). This will help you make your reading multi sensory and help get you more comfortable with the idea. Eventually, you should try to do this with just your eyes. Think of this as a stepping stone to become an even better reader
