Life's End
The old woman was near death. I could
hear her try to draw breath. I felt helpless as a doctor in this remote part
of the world. Was there nothing I could
do?

As the doctor goes around the ward, a
feeling of sadness comes over her, as
she attends to this old lady.

Twelve months ago, she remembers this
old lady, strong and robust, but had the
look of fear on her face, that day she had
an appointment with the hospital to see
a consultant, regarding the results of her
test.

Which came back positive, she was
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, stage
four, meaning the cancer has spread to
other parts of the body, it is one of the
most dangerous types of cancer, which
progress rapidly, the one - year survival
rate is twenty five per cent, and the
five-year rate sits at only six per cent.

Over the last few months she has been
in and out of the hospital, due to her
chemotherapy treatment, with the usage
of drugs to destroy the cancer cells,
eventually all the ups and downs of
going to the hospital, chemotherapy
sessions has taken its toll.

She was admitted to hospital, her condition deteriorated from bad to
worse as the doctor looks down at
the old lady gasping for breath, she
looks gaunt and emaciated and most
definitely in unimaginable pain.

After awhile all the drugs given, her
body has become immune to it and
there's not much hope after that, as
the the doctor knows, nothing much
more can be done for the patient.

When it comes to that stage the procedure is do not "revive the patient"
