Who was in the house?
I was in my uncle's house that time, with my uncle, aunt and cousins. It was many years back. We were kids back then. I remember the incident very vividly.
My aunt is a very strong woman. It's not easy to scare her. One day, while she was cooking, she heard my uncle's voice from the next room. She was confused if she heard right, because uncle was supposed to be in his office. Him being at the house at this period of time wasn't expected. She thought maybe it was her mistake. She continued to cook, while we played in the garden. All of a sudden, she heard my uncle call her out, "Aparna! A cup of tea!' She was shocked. She wasn't wrong that he was home, so she thought. She said, "Yes, I'm coming." And started preparing a cup of tea for him. After 10 minutes, she took the cup of tea and went to the room. When she entered, there was no one. She thought he was in the washroom. She kept the cup on a centre table in the room and went to check the main door. She saw it was locked from inside. There was no one in the house except her, who could open the door. Or maybe the children did, she thought. But the garden was behind the kitchen. She should have seen had anyone come out. She thought that she overlooked. And moreover, the latch was at the top of the door. None of us could have opened it without climbing onto something. Nevertheless, she went to the garden and saw the children running. There were all of us. She asked us, "Children! Did any of you open the main door?" All of us looked at her in unison. Her son said, "No, Mumma! All of us were here only. Nobody went out." Everybody agreed then. "Yes,we didn't go out."
Now, Aparna Aunty really got scared. The children weren't lying. And she didn't open the door. Then how could my uncle come inside. Maybe it was all a misconception. Maybe it was all inside her head, she thought. And, in those days there was no system of interlock and extra keys were also not made. It wasn't possible for him to enter. The door wasn't broken either. To confirm that she heard it wrong, she went to check her room. She entered the room but again it was empty.
What she saw next made her so terror struck that she stood there for sometime without knowing what to do. She saw the empty cup of tea lying on the centre table, exactly at the place she left. She was horrified. This meant that there was someone in the house. She gathered her courage and called out her husband, "Are you there? How did you come inside?" She got no answer. She checked the washroom. There was no one. She checked every other room. She couldn't find a soul. Even we stopped playing and when she told us that she heard uncle, we too started searching. It was a one storey house. All of us searched every nook and corner but we couldn't find anyone.
In those days, mobile phones didn't exist. There was only a landline phone in the house and the same in his office. She dialed his office number and waited. Someone picked it up and said, "Hello? Who is this?" It was a different voice, maybe my uncle's colleague was on the other side. So my aunt asked, "Is Mr. Vikram there? I'm his wife and I want to talk to him now." Hearing this the man said, "Yes, yes, Ma'am. He is here." My aunt was pale by then. Next she heard his voice, "Hello? Aparna?" She couldn't believe her ears. If he was in his office, then who was in her house? Who could come inside without the door being opened? Who could ask her for a cup of tea in the exact same voice as her husband's? And who could drink the cup of tea? She couldn't understand anything but decided not to tell him anything over the phone. She just said, "Yes, I was worried about you. So, I called. You come home and I'll tell you everything." She was breathing heavily. "Are you alright? Are the children fine? Did anything happen?" He was tensed. My aunt replied, "Yes, we're all fine. Just come back fast." Saying this she kept the receiver. We all gathered around her and never left her side after that.
In the evening when my uncle came, she narrated the entire incident to him. He couldn't believe his ears. He even saw the empty cup lying on the table, untouched. We all knew that day, that there was some unseen force which had been in the house. We could never understand what it was. But the incident sends chills within us, even now.
