Coming out and being proud
Coming out and being proud

This month is Pride Month, and what better way to start it off with someone coming out proud!

In case you live under a rock, Don Lemon just got married. Don is an American television journalist best known for being a host on CNN from 2014 until 2023. He was also a news correspondent for NBC on its programming, such as Today and NBC Nightly News. Lemon is also a recipient of an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2002 for his coverage of the capture of the Washington, D.C. snipers. He also received three regional Emmy Awards for his special report on real estate in Chicago and a business feature on Craigslist.
Lemon came out in his 2011 book Transparent. Recently, in an interview with The New York Times, the anchor said, “I think it would be great if everybody could be out. But it’s such a personal choice.”

“People have to do it at their own speed. I respect that. I do have to say that the more people who come out, the better it is for everyone,” he continued. “I think if I had seen more people like me who are out and proud, it wouldn’t have taken me 45 years to say it, to walk in the truth.”

Recently, he married his long-time love, Tim Malone. He said when asked about his decision to marry and that he married a white man.
“To me it’s just ignorance, actually. You love who you love. You fall in love with who you fall in love with. Had I fallen in love with a black man, I would’ve married a black man. Had I fallen in love with an Asian man, I would’ve married an Asian man.”

Lemon went on to say, “It just so happens. I fell in love with him, and that’s who I married, and that’s it. People should be able to love who they love. I’m not in anybody’s business… I didn’t tell my momma who she should marry, I didn’t tell my sister who she should marry and no one should be telling me who I should marry. People who have been discriminated against should know better.”

That was wonderfully said. You can't help who you fall in love with. If you fall in love with a woman or man. If they are black or white, republican or democratic. Jewish or Christian. Why is it so important to people who someone falls in love with? It's none of your business. Mind your own damn business. This is not your life.

I am all about everyone having a choice. A choice to love who they want. To all have the same rights. To have a choice over your own body. To say what you want to.

So today, my friends, I am here to say good for you, Don! Everyone gets to love who they want to. We are all the same, we want love, we want better for our families, and we want respect to make our own decisions. We all bleed red people. Can't we just celebrate people for who they are or who they want to be?
I know I do! So to everyone out there, Happy Pride Month!
