DIARY OF A HUNTER
A SCARY MIDNIGHT (EP 01)
By Isheanopa Mateke
"John! John! Where are you?" These were the echoes of my voice being returned by the mountains which were the pillars of the darkest forest I was now trapped in.
"What could be happening to him?" I wondered.
He had left saying he was going back to collect something which he had left in car, but it was now two hours since he had left. My worries were that he had hurt himself or met a predator or in a middle of some kind of danger. All these were unanswered because he never showed up.
I was worried because since we had started taking this adventures he never did something of this sort. We used to travel in the most darkest forests known in Zimbabwe but here in Chimanimani forest things had turned upside down. Not that we haven't warned by the tour guides, they warned us but our bravery misled us.
We walked in the middle of the forest with only our bags full with our supplies. We were talking with low voices as we were walking down to look for the most scary place to camp. It sounds like crazy but that was our style of doing things. I and John we had been best friends since we were two and from there we went at same schools till now we were doing our Advanced Level our last year at high school. Though we were going to write our exams the following week we decided to take a trip away from Bulawayo our hometown. We embarked on a journey to the largest forest in Zimbabwe which is Chimanimani. Well known with it's long indegenous trees and animals.
John was the one who was driving all the way from Bulawayo, while I was telling him some scary stories and silly jokes. We laughed all the way from awayBulawayo till we got at Chimanimani forest main entrance.
"We advise you not to camp somewhere which is not a camping site and also don't find yourself outside the camping site during the night especially at far east end of the forest," the guard at the gate warned us. Instead of us listening to his warnings we were looking for the most restricted area, which was Far East End of the forest.
"Eeh Sir! Which is the exact road to that far east end of the forest because we don't want to find ourrselves not in that road," controversially I asked and the guard just gazed at me and he pointed it on the map which was on the notice board.
"Here are your tickets," the guard said as he stratches his hand towards us.
"Nah! We don't need them, go and give your kids they will play with them as toys," carelessly John shouted as he drove away.
We laughed as the Land Cruiser was rolling down the small tarred road. We were hearding straight...
