Rue Part 6
It was dark and cold. Twinkling stars and a beautiful full moon decorated the dark blue sky. It was a dangerous time to be outside. It was time for the wolves to come out and dine.
Rue and Tiny decided to take shelter in a small cave. They were just in time to escape the heavy downpour. It was dark inside the cave. An occasional flash of lightning lit the cave.
There were a pair of broken slippers, a dirty old sheet and an old map. The cave must have been used before. They were exhausted from the journey. They hadn't eaten all day. Rue took her shoes off and massaged her sore legs.
"My arms are hurting as well," she said. She leaned back on the cave wall. It felt cold and hard against her back. She got goose bumps and had to lean forward again.
Tiny took the sheet and shook off the dust by hitting it against the wall.
They were both shivering and hurting. He dropped the sheet on her head and sat across her.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Rue yelled. She was tired and irritable. She threw the sheet away in anger. "Get away from me, your shoes are on my skirt, you idiot!" she shouted. Tiny did not respond. He was shivering uncontrollably.
Rue regretted screaming at him. She took the sheet and wrapped it around him. "I'm still mad at you, but I don't want you to catch a cold." Rue said. Tiny didn't say a word, his shivering intensified significantly. He was breathing heavily and fast. She became concerned for him. "Are you alright?" she asked. He still didn't say a word. Another flash of lightning lit his face. His eyes were popped out, his face had a fearful expression. "Are you afraid of lightning? You were never afraid of it before. Is it the dark then? No that can't be it either. What is it? Please tell me," Rue said almost in tears. She realised he wasn't shivering due to the cold. He was having a seizure. He often got them when he was hungry and tired.
"No, it can't be that! Not now, not when we are all alone. I wish Nadie was here," she said and tears flowed down her face.
This isn't the time for me to cry. I must be strong for Tiny. I'm all he has right now, she thought as she wiped away her tears on her sleeve. She sat besides him and hugged him as tightly as she could so that he would stop shaking. His body had stiffened. "Don't worry, I'm here with you. I won't let anything happen to you. You'll be fine in a few minutes. Try to relax and everything will be alright," she whispered calm and soothing words in his ears. After 2 minutes, his shaking was less intense and he wasn't stiff. She pulled back her arms, releasing him from the hug. The shaking went back to its previous intensity. She layed him down and rested his head on her lap. She gently stroked his head. "You're getting better. Just hang in there a while longer and you'll be completely fine, like nothing had happened," she said. A lightening flash revealed her happy face to Tiny. Her eyes were partly closed and a big gentle smile lit her face. Tears of relief and joy were sparkling on her cheeks.
