Andrew Rodgers: The Dead Boy Walking
South Africa

I'm in the state hospital when I feel a faint and light headache pound softly in my head. My temporary work place, the Cape Town State hospital. After I graduated college early, I decided to take a small temporary job, working as a nurse. It makes me feel abundantly good about myself, knowing that I'm helping and taking care of the sick and injured.

It is kind of embarrassing that at twenty one years of age, I still do not have a clue what to do with my life. After father's death, nearly two years earlier, things became a bit difficult and hard to process and I kind of withdrew from the world and the people around me, but lucky for me I found this site on my computer, a job offer stating that they desperately needed someone, with my knowledge in medicine and social skills I acquired in college, I took the job offer and found myself here at this humble and happy place,CSH, where I then started my job as a nurse.
It's easy though, they just require you to have patience and friendliness, which I don't have a problem with. I'm an elite in those departments.

I'm walking down the corridor of the brightly lit hospital, with bright white coloured walls and ceiling. Empty hospital beds lay stranded on the sides of the corridor wall as I pass by. Some nurses and doctors discussing urgent matters about patients pass by too and I greet them.

The aching headache takes over again, but I ignore it as I continue to stride down to the corridor, patients lay in their respective rooms either reading or eating their meals,I greet them too and continue walking. They murmur their replies and I head for Dr Fritz,my boss.
He is a kind gentleman, mid forties with jet black hair, with some grey hair on his temples. Short and bulky would be how I would describe him, smooth chocolate brown skin that enhances his handsomeness.

I soon arrive at his office door, but before I get to knock and make my presence known, the headache increases and this time my whole body feels the impact and the searing pain. My limbs almost give out and numbness overtakes them. I stand still for a few seconds to see clearly over the dizziness that wants to engulf me.
Shortly after ,it fades again and I'm shocked, flabbergasted, and scared. 'What the hell just happened here?' I ask myself. I grip the sterilized silver greyish door knob and push the door open.

Dr. Fritz is seated at his organized desk when I enter into his medium sized room. His office is pretty ordinary and normal. There's nothing scattered or laying around on the floor, it's neat.

"Good morning Mr Rodgers." Dr Fritz greets when he sees me approaching him from the now closed door.
"I've been wanting you to sign these papers for me, for a patient checkup on the fourth floor downstairs, but I couldn't find you."

"Good morning Dr, I hope you had a great night of sleep after the surgery you did yesternight. And yes of course I will do as you request Dr.

I take the clipboard with forms on it from him and place them under my left arm.
I stand there for a few minutes to see if he needs anything else.

"if that's all Dr, may I leave please?"

"Of course Andrew you may leave, I'll summon you when I need you to do something, but for now just go do your duties."

I stride back out and head into the corridor.

Although I only manage to get three strides ,when I collapse like a sack of potatoes on the ground. I collapse forehead first on the corridor floor and an excruciating endless pain overtakes my whole body. I hear faint footsteps and shouting, when the whole world goes black.

White ceiling, white walls, that's the first thing my eyes see when I wake up. Walking, falling, shouting, footsteps, shouting and so my brain tries to figure out what had occured when I blacked out.

Oh yeah I fainted. Great.

I try to raise the upper part of my body. Slowly weakly and painfully I succeed. The door knob twists and seconds pass, when Dr Fritz enters.

"Good you're awake." he says wearily faced.
I see another emotion flash on his face but it disappears as fast as it appeared.

"We need to talk."
Somehow I don't think I'll lime where this conversation will lead to in the end. My breaths quicken and my heart starts to pump quicker against my ribs without my doing.

I stare at him in an excruciatingly long and quiet silence until I finally decide to answer.

"Okay Dr, you can talk. Is it something serious though?" I ask wide eyed and fearfully.

To be honest I'm petrified.
What if . Oh no, don't overthink it Andrew. Don't overthink it. I chastise myself internally.

"Do you know know why you fainted Andrew?"

He called me Andrew which means it's something serious or personal either way it's making my stomach queasy.
I should just hear what he has to say so I move on with my life damnit! But I'm horrified.

"No." Simple and easy just line that.

He sighs and removes his small rounded glasses.

"I ran so e test on...
