Unfortunate events - an autobiography (3)
....
Still in 8-c, class teacher was selecting students who can recite a poem in the morning assembly. The girl was excited. She stood up to give herself a chance but teacher had already selected another student, named Mansi, for reciting because she has been active in such activities since 1st standard. But teacher saw the new girl standing up so she also called her up and gave a piece of paper on which a poem by Sarojini Naidu was scribbled. The girl recited the poem very confidentially, but wait... she can hear sounds, where voices were laughing at her. After reading she gave back the paper to teacher. Teacher gave the paper to Mansi and asked the girl to wait there and listen how she is reciting. The girl was feeling embarrassed. Maybe because she heard the whispering or the teacher stopped her and she took it as if their teacher was comparing her. Mansi recited the poem very beautifully. The girl was also mesmerized by her reading. Now teacher declared her decision in which she choss Mansi over the girl, but she asked the new girl to participate in the morning assembly. She asked her if she can draw any chocolate's wrapper on the cardboard so that they can use it as the prop in the drama. Classes were going well as the girl was an average student and can understand whatever was taught to her. She went home. Her dad again came to pick her because her home was 15km away from the school and her dad was still not able to got hold of any trustable vehicle for school transportation. She asked her dad to bring all the required items to make that prop. But a big cardboard was not available in their nearby stationaries, so her dad asked her to do the homework and he will collect all these items on his way back to home (he was going to office again). She waited for her dad eagerly, completed her homework, but today her dad was late. Her younger brother who is only a year younger than her told their mom about her sister's project and guessed that this might be the reason he is getting late. Normally her dad came home at 7, but today it's 9.30. Girl's mother started scolding her because she said it was not necessary to participate in such activities, it's just a waste of time and now due to you your dad is late.
Finally her dad was back and he was late because he had to complete some urgent work at office and also he had to buy few things. The whole family was up till 12.00 a.m. because the girl was completing her craft. Next day she reached her school 15 min. before the arrival time and showed her craft. It was beautiful and everyone praised her. But suddenly a boy pointed out that the girl had written the wrong spelling of Cadbury. Soon the praises of beautiful craft was changed into the mocks of wrong spelling. Mansi came and said "see this happens, when you don't pay attention to your spellings". She stood up for me there and the girl finally saw a friend in her. Assembly happened and the girl was standing on the stage, holding the cardboard prop, but excited because she was on the stage before the whole school.
p.s.- no-one noticed the spelling during the assembly.
