"She's heading into the forest! "one of the soldiers yells, his voice barely audible over the storm.
"After her! Don't let her escape!'
Rose ran, not knowing where her feet would take her, only that she needed to get away. The rain lashed against her face, and behind her, the soldiers shouts grew louder, their voices tinged with anger and desperation.

Her lungs burned with each breath, every inhalation a ragged, desperate gulp of air that barely filled her starving lungs. The cold rain sliced down, mingling with her sweat and tears, turning the world into a blur of wet gray. Each raindrop felt like a tiny dagger, stinging her exposed skin. The forest ahead, dark and shadowy, twisted roots and overhanging branches, but she pressed on, driven by sheer terror.
Her dress, heavy with rain and mud. It clung to her legs, hindering her movement, but she didn't dare stop to tear it away.
