Writing Hacked 13: Main Characters
Disclaimer: PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING FURTHER!

I have no formal education in creative writing or literature whatsoever. I learned everything by myself through youtube, reading, research, understanding, and writing away as much as I can. I make a lot of mistakes whether it be grammatical or any other kind. I hope you can point them out and help me correct it so I can learn more. I will try my best to provide you errorless guidance though. I am not going to pretend to know everything because I really don't. I have a lot to discover yet.
Whatever I am going to tell you here is through my own understanding and experience.
Enjoy.

3)🔶LOVE INTEREST

Any romantic partner of the protagonist is called a love interest.
They can be a crush, gf/bf, wife/husband, or even friends.

They are important because they can influence the choices that a protagonist/antagonist makes.
They influence the story of their emotional connection and its entirely up to the writer and the protagonist how much they use them to affect the story.

There can also be multiple love interests like in a love triangle.

In romance, the story revolves around them.
In crime/thriller/suspense, they form a very important part.

You don't have to have a love interest in every story. Sometimes, they don't even have to be in the present scenario. They could be in the past and show up in a memory or something.

They are the best tools to create drama, emotional conflict, plot twist, and a happy ending.

Coupling between the characters is a very efficient way to reveal their emotions whether they are male-female, male-male, female-female relationships. Each is unique and has a great story to tell.

↪Example:

A) In the movie Bahubali, love interests were used as a trigger for both Shiva, who began his journey of climbing a waterfall after he discovered Avantika's mask and for Amrindra Bahubali who brought about a plot twist when he fell in love with Devasena and decided to let go of the Kingship.
These decisions not only brought emotional conflict but also caused a major change in the motivations and goals of the protagonists.

B) Harry Potter in his years of journey to finish Voldemort has multiple love interests. First, Cho and then he ended up with Ginny Weasley as her husband.
A bit of drama was created when many characters like Luna Lovegood and Hermione were hinted to be his love interest but that was for defining that he only sees them as friends later.
Why do that then? Well, defining that they weren't in love spoke a lot about each character. How they liked them as a friend and never saw each other in a romantic light speaks about their maturity, likes/dislikes.

Ron getting jealous of Harry after he fell in love with Hermione also brought minor tension among friends but that added the spiciness in the story along with changing their decision, motives, the image of one another,

C) In many crime stories, the love interest is the first suspect and a potential killer. Husband killing wife, gf killing bf, or vice versa is very common.
In a Korean movie, The Handmaiden, when a man chooses a lowly woman to become a handmaiden to a rich lady whom he wanted to con and marry for money, the biggest reveal is *SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE AHEAD* when the rich lady ends up falling for her handmaiden. Everything changes in the story and keeps you wondering till the very end. It's an amazing movie, a pure work of art. Adult writers must watch it.

🌸Tip: Love interest, if written rightly attracts the audience easily and creates a light-hearted atmosphere even during tense times. Love is a powerful emotion. Use it well.🌸

4)🔶MENTOR

The character who guides the protagonist throughout their journey and teaches them about significant things such as a new world if the story takes place in a new kind of realm.

This character is important to add especially if your character is young. Familiarizing the protagonist with new techniques is important and essential for survival.

🌸Tip: Do not use the mentor in end the villain completely. It affects protagonist vs antagonist tension and relationship.🌸

↪Example:

A) Kattappa was a mentor to Shiva as he told him about the kingdom of Mahishmati, his past and helped him fo defeat Bhallaladeva.

B) Dumbledore was a mentor to Harry until the very end. He was always there. The writer created a very good balance between Voldemort Vs Harry and Dumbledore. He helped Harry in almost every aspect of life. Harry's past, present, and future were greatly influenced by him.

C) In my story, Garden of Spiders, Christina saw Davis as her mentor, and impressing him was her goal. She admired and respected him greatly and he saw a detective in her too.

I hope you understood everything clearly 🙏 Thank you.
