Nightmares of Hope Segment 1/5: Gardening Greatness
Judy lived in the country for most of her life in a deserted area filled with nothing but fresh fruits and vegetables. She never liked eating anything unless it came from her own soil. Grocery stores were a foreign place to her as she was never happy with the chemicals that were sprayed on the food before purchasing. She had an older daughter away at college who was coming home that afternoon for the weekend, and she wanted to throw together a special dinner for the two of them. Her daughter never liked eating healthy, which was one of her biggest pet peeves, so she tried to think of a meal that was simple enough without the extra variety of greens and herbs. She knew her daughter would eat it out of respect and kindness that her mother worked so hard to prepare, but to Judy that still wasn’t satisfying. In the kitchen she grabbed her notebook and a pen to start listing ingredients.

“Alright, let’s see potatoes, garlic, grains, tomatoes, lettuce.” She decided she would make pasta in a homemade sweet tomato sauce with a freshly tossed salad and garlic bread to go on the side. As Judy continued writing out her list she felt her pocket vibrate. “Hey loves how are you?”

“Hey Mom,” Holly Greeted. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m going to be a little late coming home tonight, but I will still make it for dinner.”

“That’s perfectly fine. I actually haven’t even started it yet. Just take your time and I will see you when you get here.” After getting off the phone, she grabbed her notebook and headed out in the garden to grab her supplies.

Judy picked the finest of her vegetables before heading back inside to start boiling the water for the noodles. She then started dicing tomatoes so the sauce would have enough time to simmer. During the process of her creation she thought back to what made her fall in love with the hobby and desire of harvesting her own meals. She was younger and seen a bunch of farmers picking and selling their own crops such as tomatoes, herbs, squash, green beans, carrots, broccoli, strawberries, apples, and all other different types of stuff. She admired their accomplishments and remembered devouring the taste of each sample. After that she knew she found her calling. Stepping back into reality she grabbed a head of lettuce to start chopping coarsely for the salad. She added cucumbers, carrots, and more tomatoes. She glanced at the clock. After six thirty. Even though Holly called to inform her of being tardy, she knew her daughter would be arriving soon. The noodles were tender, the sauce was soft and steaming, and the salad had been prepared. “Now the only thing left to do is make the garlic bread.”

She finished setting the table around the time of seeing headlights pull into the driveway. The bowl of pasta sat in the center next to salad. She took the hot garlic bread out the oven, which smelled most of the house up.

“Mom, everything smells amazing!” Holly complimented when she walked in the door. Judy smiled inside. They sat down and started plating their food. Judy loved gardening greatness.
