"It's a girl! "
The doctor gushed, placing the wailing infant on the woman's chest.
She heaved trying to catch her breath in the aftermath of her gruelling labour. Tears of pain mingled briefly with tears of joy before dissolving into tears of sadness.
She had once again given birth to a girl! Her third daughter. What would her husband and in-laws do to her now?...

She had mixed feelings, anticipating anger of her mother in law, helplessness of her husband and fatal attitude of father in law, she hugged her daughter more tightly. The only beings who would have been elated, must be her sisters. The nurse was hesitant to congratulate her, she had similar fears. She left with a confused smile, wishing her all the best.

The moment of truth was here. She controlled her tears, closed her eyes and clasped the baby in her arms. The door of the room opened and came inside all her family with bouquets, balloons and laddoos. None was unhappy, they congratulated her, kissed the baby and thanked the God. She was perplexed, wasn't believing anything that was happening around, when her father and mother in law came near her, kissed her forehead and stuffed a laddoo in her mouth.

They were really happy, she could feel that. After years, she felt like a queen with a princess in her arms. Tears welled in her eyes and she atlast felt confident for once, being a girl's mother.
