The Shark
"Sharks are perfect. They kill. They make baby sharks, then they Die."

If you've ever been snorkeling or scuba diving and shared the waters with one. You might have had the same feeling of utter stillness that I had. Trust me you want to swim away but you can't. Simpliy because you desperately don't want it to follow you. No doubt at the time, I was trying to recall what I was told in training...... something about nudging the nose away if god forbid, it decides it wants a little taste of you. Not that I would fancy putting my hand anywhere near the row upon row of glimmering white steak knives that constitute the things mouth. All of this goes through your head whilst thinking "did it look my way"? Images of the collective pop culture surrounding sharks flood the back of your mind "we're gonna need a bigger boat".

This moment was terrifying but there was a kind of purity in it. A sense of primordial stillness overcomes all rational thought. There's nothing else in the universe besides the shark. This million year old preditor. It exists outside of man. It was hear before us and will be hear, in all likelihood, after us. That's how you can appreciate them. When you share their water; it is you that is the alien. And just like that it returns to the blue yonder from which it came. The feeling of stillness is gone but you certainly don't forget about it any time soon.
