Is this a Love Story?
#WritcoStoryPrompt93
Days that seemed to go on forever, and times when you couldn't find someone to talk to. Come up with a tale to go along with it.
This story starts on a cold humid night following a clerk at a gas station.
The man stood leaned over by the store entrance smoking a cigarette, all the while he was going over everything that had went wrong in his life just in these past couple of months. Life, which was once so full of wonder and joy, now was so empty and felt hollow without any real meaning. He continously pushed himself through each day knowing that one day soon he would be out of there, away from this dead end job, and on his way to a better life, or so he hoped.
Each customer became a different blur, and he thought to himself,
"I will never find another girl that I will fall desperately for, that would be a mistake."
In that same moment he raised his eyes to the next customer, and fell into a trance. To call her gorgeous would be lacking the proper vocabulary. This woman was angelic, she had magical long black hair, deep dark piercing brown eyes that could stop a freight train dead in it's tracks, and beautiful pale white skin.
"Hi, can I get a pack of American Spirits light blue?" She asked so modestly, as she slightly tilted her head and cracked a smile
Suddenly he realized he's been staring at her for way too long already.
"Yes! Of course" He blurted out with a momentary shake of his head, but as he did he could feel his face getting hot and his face began to blush a beet red color.
He quickly grabbed her cigarettes and rang her up. On her way out, and with his head still feeling heavy with butterflies, she looked back with a smile and waved him goodbye.
The next couple of hours seemed to float by. As he started to step outside for another much needed smoke, another customer bursts through the entrance.
"Can you please help me, I am so lost! I've never been around this area before and my phone died, and I forgot my wallet.."
It was a woman, attractive but nothing to write home about. She had very long blonde hair, hazel eyes and she wore sweat pants and a hoodie.
"Okay okay, calm down. Here you can use one of our chargers to get some juice in your phone and hopefully find your way back home afterwards."
He didn't really think much of it because he had done the same for other customers before.
"Really? Thank you so much, you're a life saver!"
"It's no problem, really."
They stood there quietly for a brief moment before she broke the silence.
"Wanna smoke?"
She asked, as she pinched her fingers together hinting that she had some weed. He thought about it for a second, because he did enjoy the occasional smoke sesh, but after considering where he was and where they would be smoking it, in public, he decided against it.
"No thank you, I appreciate the offer though."
However, he would soon find out, she wouldn't quit so easily.
"Oh come on, I know you wanna smoke. Let's step outside, I have a bowl loaded right now."
She stared at him with eager eyes.
"Okay, fuck it. Let's go."
They stepped outside and she grabbed her pipe from inside her driver door and began stuffing it with the devils lettuce. Once she finished she handed it over to him and offered him, "greens". He kindly rejected and encouraged her to start it off. As they smoked they talked about many things, but towards the end of the conversation she told him about how her and her baby's daddy, who she isn't with anymore, run a growing weed business together, where they help growers find dispensaries to sell to, and offered him an opportunity to join them and make way more money then he could ever make at the gas station. After they finished their bowl, and her phone had some charge to it, they said their goodbyes, and she gave him a phone number to contact if he decided to join them.
A few weeks went by, and on his day off he stumbled across the phone number the stranded woman had given him, he stared at the ten digit number for a while before he sent a message.
After about a day of messages back and forth, the two of them decided to meet up, not work related, but just to hangout. They decided to meet at her place.
When he gets there he's greeted by a very large two story house. So large in fact, he started to wonder if he was even at the right place, and just before he could grab his phone to call her and insure that he was in fact at the right house, the front door opened and out she stepped. She waved at him to come inside, but then turned and walked directly back into the house. Shortly after he received a message from her,
"Hey just come on in, I'm up stairs first door on the left"
He deemed it a little odd that she expected him to just walk into her home, and then find her in it, and he had an interesting feeling in his gut but he brushed it off and proceeded to enter the residence.
When he arrived at the front steps he saw a large, heavy wooden door with a black metal doorknocker. He slowly pushed the door open and peaked into a pitch black room behind it. Finally the door slowed to a stop, almost fully open now. The outside light lit up the first three or four steps of the stair case immediately to the left of the front door, and they seemed to curve to the right, up and deeper into the structure of the house.
As he entered the residence he shut the door behind him, blinding himself in darkness. He stood still for a moment as his eyes adjusted. Once they were, he started making his way up the stairwell. At the top of the staircase he could see a small gate, illuminated by a round window on the opposite wall funneling out a tiny amount of moonlight. As he opproached the small wooden gate he could see the hallway behind it went back about four feet wide but cut directly to the right. He pushed the gate open and made his way down the even darker long empty hallway.
Finally, after what seemed like years of slow blind walking he sees the flickering of what could only be fire light bouncing off the walls from the now obvious left turn at the end of this tunnel. As he got closer to the light his curiosity started to reach it's peak.
"Did she light a bunch of candles?"
He thought to himself as he got nearer to rounding the corner, but just before he did he felt a sharp prick of a cold needle like object enter and exit the right side of his neck. He stumbled for a few steps before finding the wall next to him furthest away from the object that just stabbed him, while frantically grasping the right side of his neck with his hands to try and feel his wound. Panic started to set in, and the flickering light just a few feet from him started to fade away, but just before it faded to darkness completely he saw the shadowy image of two people holding hands in hoods wearing skull faces surrounded in a puddle of blood in the shape of a heart.
The clerk would never be seen nor heard from again.
