What Are Friends For? (Part Two)
Part Two

After driving some hours on the expressway, the driver turned the car towards the way leading to Abiodun village. The village where Abiodun father and mother live. The journey was not comfortable for Abiodun. He became worried after the driver turned from the main road and was driving towards his village. "This is the way to my village. Finally, I have destroyed myself with my acts. So the operation I taught was smooth and smart has exposed me to the world that I was involved. But for them not to see me was the reason I stayed in the backyard while the other five guys entered the house. With all the masks on our faces, how did they know I was among them?" These and more were what Abiodun was thinking as they were getting closer to his parent's house in the village.

They got to Abiodun parents house in the village. As they were coming down of the car, Abiodun father with two of his friends slowly walked out of the house to meet them. Abiodun was shocked when he saw his father looking dull and regretful. Immediately Abiodun went down on his knees and as he was about to start pleading for forgiveness, his father hugged him and told him his mother was dead.

Abiodun immediately changed his thoughts. He asked Yemi father if the death of his mother was the reason they brought him to the village and he replied it was the reason. Abiodun became relieved after knowing his secret was not exposed but was crying for the loss of his mother. Abiodun saw his siblings and their family members who came to mourn the death of his mother. He asked his father if his mother was sick before her death. Abiodun father explained his mother was not sick before her sudden death. He told Abiodun her mother was shot by robbers. "Robbers? How come?" asked Abiodun. Abiodun father further explained that he with his mother were in Lagos at Yemi father house to collect the money he promised them to assist their farm business. "Suddenly, the robbers came in. They were five in number with masks on their faces. Yemi father didn't argue but cooperated with them. They demanded money and it was given to them but as they were leaving one of them just open fire and shot your mother on her chest. Immediately she fell and died".

After all Abiodun father explained, Abiodun could not say a word. His tension raised and he was shaking. Suddenly, Abiodun shouted and burst into tears. To his father and those around him they thought he was crying for the loss of his mother but to Abiodun it was another thing.

Abiodun went and stay under a tree alone. There he was thinking about everything that happened. "So they opened fire that day upon the warning I gave to them not to harm anyone. If I had known it will result in this way, I would not have suggested robbing Yemi father. So the money we even stole was met for my parent's farm business expansion. Can I ever be forgiven for this? Abiodun asked himself".

Abiodun was asked to stay a week with his family in the village while Yemi parents left back to Lagos.

Yemi was sad when he heard about the death of Abiodun mother. He travelled to Abiodun village with two of his friends to show their sympathy.

Abiodun friends (i.e cult members) were worried when they didn't see him back in school. They tried to reach him by phone but it was not successful. They thought if Yemi father had known Abiodun was the one that set him up and got him arrested.

After a week of staying in the village, Abiodun left back to school. In annoyance, he went to meet his friends at their usual joint and started fighting them. They all wondered what can be the reason Abiodun was acting madly at them. As they were trying to stop Abiodun from rough handling them their commander showed up.

"Are you mad, asked their commander"? Arrogantly Abiodun answered, " Yes, I am mad and you guys are the reason for my madness". Abiodun explained to them all that happened. He made to understand the two visitors they met with Yemi parents were his father and mother. He told them the gun one of them shot that day hit his mother and killed her immediately. He further explained the money they collected from Yemi father that day was what his parents came to collect for the expansion of their farm business.

After the explanation, there was silence as everyone was in a regretful mood. Abiodun started weeping bitterly. "You guys have ruined my life. Despite all the warnings I gave you that day that no one should be injured let alone killing. You guys now went in and killed no other person but my mother".

Months later, instead of Abiodun changing for good, he turned worse. He now has a cruel attitude. He didn't go to class for lectures anymore but goes to clubs, womanising, drug-addicted and many more. A year later, Abiodun became the overall head of the cult members in the university and gave himself a nickname called Abijah. More students were initiated to their cult and this made their population increase. They moved beyond the campus and started doing different illegal operations like robbery, kidnapping, rapping, drug trafficking, etc. They went no more for lectures and when it is period for school examination, they will cause a riot to forfeit the whole programs.

Yemi was a popular boy in his school because of his good academic performance. He attended different competitions for his department and school and won many awards with medals.

Yemi father ran into a problem when his business got ruined after he was defrauded by some men. All Yemi father properties were sold to pay bank loans collected. The only remaining property was the uncompleted bungalow house he has in a local area to which they relocate. They became poor and things were not going well with them. This affected Yemi father and later died of a stroke while Yemi mother became a cleaner in a factory. No family, friends or even Abiodun was called severally by Yemi and his mother but he ignore their calls.

Yemi now works as a casual staff in a supermarket and from his allowance, he finances his education. One day Yemi decided to visit Abiodun in his school since they didn't hear from him. When Yemi got there he was surprised when he heard Abiodun was no more in Nigeria but has travelled abroad. Yemi wondered where Abiodun got the money, Visa, international passport, and other things he used to travel to America. Yemi thought of how he can get Abiodun contact so he decided to travel to Abiodun village to meet his father. In the village, Yemi was told Abiodun has taken his father and siblings to America.

When Yemi got home, he told his mother everything he heard about Abiodun and his family. There Yemi mother advised him to think less and look to God alone. Yemi two sisters (Dupe and Lola) just returned from the market where they went to sell beans cake. They met Yemi and their mother under the tree discussing. They interrupted and told them how they were disturbed at the market by the council tax collectors.

Abiodun lives a luxurious life in America. He brought for his father and siblings a house and car to each of them.

After all struggles, Yemi finished University, entered law school graduated, was called to bar and became a lawyer. Now, Yemi was able to finance his two sisters education and assist his mother financially.

Yemi later built a new house in the city where his mother and sisters live with him while the previous bungalow house built by his late father was rented out.

Yemi got married to a lady named Olamide whose father is a judge. Olamide gave birth to a boy and girl for Yemi they live happily together in their new duplex house.

5 years later, some importers were arrested and taken to court. They were caught with hard drugs and deadly weapons while screening their container at the port. The importers denied the allegations against them. Yemi was the lawyer for the government while barrister Paul was the lawyer for the suspects and Olamide father was the judge.

It was a big shock for Yemi when he saw one of the suspect men to be his old friend Abiodun. Abiodun too became surprised to see Yemi as the government lawyer to speak against him. Yemi became short of words and pleaded to the judge to adjourn the case for him to gather more information concerning the case and it was granted.

During the week, Yemi went to check Abiodun in detention. Abiodun felt ashamed of himself when he was brought out with handcuffs to meet Yemi in the meeting room. He never thought Yemi will visit him. Immediately one of the prison guides unlocked his handcuffs, he went down on his knees pleading to Yemi. Abiodun remembered all the good things Yemi with his family did to him and his family but he paid all back with evil. Abiodun started weeping.

Yemi was just looking as he didn't say anything. Abiodun prostrated before Yemi and was pleading for forgiveness. Yemi didn't still get all that was happening. He wondered what Abiodun was pleading to him about. He moved closer to Abiodun and tried to lift him but Abiodun insisted Yemi should let him be in that position.

Yemi was confused when Abiodun started confessing all he had done. He confessed how his mother died through the planned work he with his cult friends did then. How they stole Yemi father money and how they kidnapped one of Yemi sisters and collected money from Yemi father before her release.

Yemi was not worried about what Abiodun was saying until he heard Abiodun confess he was the person behind how Yemi father was defrauded of all his money and properties years back. Tears started dropping from Yemi eyes. He remembered the tough times his family passed through after everything they had was ruined after his father was defrauded.

Yemi insisted Abiodun should stand up and they both sit on a chair opposite each other. Yemi explained to Abiodun how the bad situation then caused the early death of his father. Immediately Abiodun heard was Yemi said, he became remorseful and could look up.

Yemi asked Abiodun how he got into drugs and other illegal businesses. Abiodun explained to Yemi how it all started in his university days after he was initiated into the secret cult and got exposed to different bad things including how he met some men who called themselves importers and exporters who introduced him to the drug business. Abiodun further explained to Yemi that those importers were the people behind his arrest. He said they set him up because he left their faction and more excel in the drug business than them.

Later in the day when Yemi got home, he thought about all Abiodun told him and if there is a way he can help him even though justice must be done.

On the day of judgment after Abiodun lawyer did all his best to defend his client (Abiodun) and Yemi the government lawyer did all his best too, the judge gave the final judgment. Abiodun and his men were sentenced to 30 years imprisonment with hard labour. Tears burst out of Abiodun eyes after he heard the judgement given. Immediately Abiodun and his men were handcuffed and led into a van that would be taking them to prison.

Yemi couldn't say anything but waved his hand to Abiodun as the van taking them to prison was moving.

Abiodun faces different challenges the first two months he got to the prison before he was able to adapt. Later Abiodun gave his life to Christ in the prison through some Christian Evangelical team that visited them in the prison. Since then everything about Abiodun changed. He read the Bible and pray regularly. He also lead a prayer team created among the prisoners.

15 years later, some old prisoners including Abiodun were given a pardon by the government.

Abiodun father is now dead, his sister and brother were deported while all their properties abroad were seized by the American government.
