Surprised
Surprise!!! Yes, I was the one surprised. I actually considered that no one would be home, but I honestly hoped. Anyway, there I sat on the soft black leather couch, unsure of whether to take a nap, read or make a few phone calls. After all, I had some time, and exactly how much time, I wasn’t sure.

I moved to sunny Arizona a few months ago.
Leaving the cold, gray Windy City was a plot hatched in the last two years of the over 60 I’d lived there. It was hard work moving. A process I hope I never have to go through again. But I said that a few times already so you just never know what will happen.

My children and grandchildren live in Chicago.
That’s the reason I keep flying back. So far in 8 months I’ve been back 4 times. I’m going back again in two weeks, so I average every other month. I usually stay about 2 weeks each visit. October is a beautiful time to visit Chicago and I love Halloween and that’s the upcoming trip. The problem was that the trip date was after my grandkids birthdays. Shea’s is the 15th, and Connor’s is the 21st. That’s why I was sitting in my son’s living room. It would’ve been the first birthday I missed! I didn’t tell anyone and landed at O’Hare Airport at 1:00 Chicago time. By the time my cab arrived then went through Chicago traffic, it was 2:30 in the afternoon. No one was home.

I talked to Steven last week and asked him what plans they had for the kids birthdays. Among a whole host of parties and activities, the actual day of Shea’s birthday was a family dinner. Great I thought. Well they decided to go to Legoland today. That’s so much fun. I’d taken them there many times and it’s a favorite spot. Besides everything you can do there and see there, there’s the lego store where both kids love to shop. I could have gone there with the cab. I didn’t. I decided to wait and would surprise them when they came home.

The other gramma, and their grandfather, had the same idea to surprise Shea. They showed up at the house about an hour after I arrived. We wound up going out for a late lunch at Denny’s .
They headed back home, an hour drive, at 5:00. I fell asleep. Waking up at 6:00 and finding myself still alone was less amusing and I was feeling a little more than foolish. Then the back door opened. They were surprised. Being a school night the kids were in bed a few hours later and I saw them off to school in the morning.

I’m at the airport again, twice in 24 hours. My flight is at 1:30pm. Next surprise visit will probably be announced, at least to my son and daughter in law.
