Weird ship- 3
Chapter 3
Robin Cook was unaware that he was being followed. The thick fog was making everything invisible in the mist. He did not notice the shadow lurking in the dark a few steps behind him. The man was slowly and steadily was moving forward keeping a close eye on him. After a while his phone buzzed . He had to pick up the call as instructed. So he stopped following Robin.
The flickering streetlight was the only light in the dark foggy alleyway. Near the electric pole stood a man in his broad fat frame , tall and majestic, dressed in dark blue jeans , a heavy woollen overcoat and gumboots. He had worn black sunglasses to hide his eyes. He picked up the buzzing cellphone . Its caller id light blinked and the phone went dark. He keyed in the password and unlocked the phone. There was a voice message and a missed call from 'Big Boss. ' He put the phone near his ear and played the voice message.
"Johnny stop following the customs officer. He doesn't have anything in use. Search the ship in the harbour. " The voice was sharp and baritone evoking a sense of discipline in the listener.
The missed call was of Big Boss . He called back.
"Search the ship in the harbour. Take your pistol. " The call ended. His eyes became fiery and he pulled out his Beretta 92FS and examined it . After checking it is ready, he put it back.
He went back to the harbour. Today was really cold night. But the harbour being near the sea, the sea waves made the night even more colder. The waves and the night crickets were the only sound heard. It was utter silence. He checked his watch . It blinked 11.30. He had to wait for half hour. At midnight the shift of guards changes. So there will be a gap period of half hour in which he could enter. The overcoat he wore inside had lots of pockets. He pulled put a small wine bottle and took a sip. His breath was flowing like hazy mist in the cold night. He rubbed his arms. The overcoat was doing nothing to mask the cold. His teeth were clattering and he was rubbing his hands to keep them warm. His watch blinked 11.45 . He squatted down and fixed his gaze on the gate . The steel gate had one lamppost that lightened the whole road nearby. The wall was made with bricks and covered in steel fence. after a while he glanced at his watch again . it was 11.55. Suddenly he heard footsteps. They were uneven and coming nearer.
He was hiding near the old sedan parked outside the nearby house. He peeped quietly. He saw the watchman in a drunken stupor. A middle aged man in his blue uniform with dishevelled hair staggering but trying very hard to walk straight. He was holding a liquor bottle, the cheap ones . He walked past him. Johnny seized the oppurtunity to follow him and quietly pocketed the keys. After a minute confirming he was gone he unlocked the lock , put the latch back in place and went in the harbour.
There were many boats thronged in a corner with their anchors tied together. He walked fast, practically running. At last he saw the ship.
